NFL Odds: Seahawks at Packers

Written December 23, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The Green Bay Packers will continue their march towards the postseason when they host the disappointing Seattle Seahawks Sunday. Pittsburgh handed the Packers their fifth loss of the season on the final play of the game as the loss of Al Harris in the secondary is becoming more of an issue. The Seahawks have struggled under first year head coach Jim Mora Jr. and are in evaluation mode of current players for next season. According to our NFL lines, Green Bay is a 14 point favorite.

Ownership in Seattle had to be very optimistic that they could contend for a division title this season after a 2008 year that was marred by injuries. QB Matt Hasselbeck missed most of last season and many analysts believed that a healthy Hasselbeck meant big things for the Seahawks. Things haven’t gone according to plan. The former Pro Bowl quarterback has thrown for 2656 yards and 15 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. It hasn’t been all Hasselbeck’s fault, but missing almost an entire year has definitely played a role in fans questioning if he is the long term answer in Seattle anymore. The lack of a running game hasn’t helped the quarterback situation as Julius Jones and Justin Forsett have split the duty in the backfield. Jones leads the team in rushing with 563 yards and two scores, while Forsett stepped in for the injured Jones and tallied 475 yards with four touchdowns. Seattle will most likely have to build through the draft at this position. The departure of Shaun Alexander had a profound effect on the success of this team. Free agent acquisition TJ Houshmandzadeh has been frustrated by the lack of balls thrown his way. The former Cincinnati Bengal has a team high 74 catches, but has found the end zone just three times. Expect many younger players to get a chance to show what they are made of in the final two games of the season. Everyone knew that someday Aaron Rodgers would develop into a nice NFL quarterback, but to become an elite player at his position in only his second full year at the position is remarkable. These following numbers are not from Madden 2010, they are real. He has thrown for 3962 yards and 28 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. His quarterback rating is over 102 and Rodgers has led his team to a 9-5 record despite being decimated by injuries on the defensive side of the ball. RB Ryan Grant has shown some life in recent weeks after getting off to a slow start. The slashing back has rushed for 1105 yards and eight touchdowns. What makes Green Bay’s offense a cut above the rest is that they are versatile in every position. Greg Jennings and Donald Driver have combined for over 1900 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. TE Jermichael Finley has emerged as one of the top young players at his position with 48 catches and four scores. James Jones is a dangerous third wide receiver and Jordy Nelson presents a deep threat. It took awhile for the Pack to get use to the 3-4 defense incorporated by Dom Capers, but they have adjusted nicely and are getting good pressure on the opposing quarterback. They will need to adjust their secondary for the playoffs as they are giving up way too many big plays in the passing game.

Green Bay gets the Seahawks at the right time as a 10th win in crucial to their playoff hopes.  They should come out with some emotion after a disappointing loss at the gun last weekend.  Aaron Rodgers is facing one of the worst pass defenses in the league that ranks 29th.  He should use his vast array of weapons on the offensive end to light up the scoreboard.  Seattle will not be able to keep pace and the Pack will cover this large number

Recommended Play: Packers -14
