NFL Season Predictions 2009

Written August 24, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

nfl-season-predictions-2009While at the beginning of the NFL season everyone is optimistic, in the end 30 teams will fail to reach the Superbowl. Last season Arizona made the unlikely run to the Superbowl as 20-1 longshots only to come up short to the Pittsburgh Steelers. This season I am going with the Vegas favorites to make to the big dance with the New York Giants facing off against the New England Patriots. The 2009 New England Patriots appear to have a better team than the version that was undefeated heading into the Superbowl two years ago only to lose to the NY Giants. The Giants meanwhile seem to have a stifling defense and a quarterback that has come into his own in Eli Manning. With Tom Brady recovering nicely from his knee injury the Pats appear ready to get revenge over the Giants in 2010 for ruining there perfect season two years ago.

The New York Giants are a well-rounded squad that seems to have everything going for him except for a proven wideout. NY was not the same team last season when Manning lost his big-play WR Plaxico Burress and that will be the factor that keeps them on the losing end of this season’s Superbowl. The Giants have some young studs at the receiving position that could be good once they gain more experience but they are still a year away. Despite the question marks at wideout the O-line is one of the best in the NFL, running back Brandon Jacobs is a battering ram and QB Eli Manning is a playmaker. The Giants are experienced and have a nasty defense that abuses QB’s but they are just a half step behind New England.

Tom Brady has complete mastery of the Patriots offense and will let Bill Belichick open up his playbook to it’s usual aggressive nature with Brady back. Belichick bolstered the running game with veteran RB Fred Taylor who still has some juice in the tank. The Patriots also stacked the cabinet on defense this season. After the team struggled in the secondary, Belichick added CB’s Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden along with two solid 2nd round secondary picks in the draft. With one of the best defensive lines in the NFL the Patriots win most wars in the trenches. The pass-rush should also see some improvement with the return of linebacker Adalius Thomas.

Some longshots to consider giving a tickle from the NFC are high-powered New Orleans Saints at 20-1 and last year’s Superbowl reps, the Arizona Cardinals, also at 20-1. Some longshots from the AFC that are worth taking a flier on are the Bill Parcells built Miami Dolphins at 28-1, and the Jeff Fischer coached Tennessee Titans at 16-1.
