NFL Spreads: Indianapolis Colts at St. Louis Rams

Written October 25, 2009 by Black Widow

The Indianapolis Colts head to St. Louis to take on the winless Rams Sunday, October 25th in Week 7 NFL. The Colts are coming off a bye week, while the Rams are coming off a 20-23 overtime loss at Jacksonville. Dating back to last season, the Rams have lost 16 straight games which is the longest current losing streak in the NFL. Now they have to contend with Peyton Manning and this high-powered Indianapolis offense. Taking a look at the NFL spreads, we find that the Colts are 14-point favorites over the Rams with a Total Set of 45.5 points for the game.

Indianapolis has started 5-0 in five of the past seven seasons, a remarkable defeat. The Colts have also won 15 straight regular season games which is a franchise record. They are one of four unbeaten teams in the league under new head coach Jim Caldwell, who is picking up right where Tony Dungy left off. Manning threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns in their last game, a 31-9 road win at Tennessee on Sunday Night Football in Week 5. Manning is on pace for the best season of his career, topping the 300-yard mark in every game so far and completing 73.5 percent of his passes. The single-season record for completion percentage is 70.55% which is held by Ken Anderson of the Bengals back in 1982. Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie have stepped up big for the Colts, replacing the injured Anthony Gonzalez. Manning has more weapons then most thought he did coming into the season, which is a big reason why the Colts are off to such a fast start. And their defense doesn’t get the credit it deserves, allowing just over 14 points/game this season. They are expected to get safety Bob Sanders back in the lineup this week as well.

The Rams have lost 16 straight games, and they nearly ended that streak last weekend. But a 20-23 loss to the Jaguars is probably more painful then if they were to get blown out, and now they have to try and bounce back against arguably the best team in the league. Their defense gives up more than 28 points/game while their offense ranks last in the league, scoring just 9.0 points/contest. They traded away one of their best players on defense, Will Witherspoon, to the Eagles for wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a sixth-round pick. They needed help at WR with Donnie Avery battling a bruised hip, and after getting little production from everyone else. This is far from the greatest show on turf with basically no production from their passing game, but the Rams are getting consistent production from running back Steven Jackson and they’ll lean on him again Sunday. Jackson is fourth in the league in rushing yards, compiling 501 yards on the ground thus far. He and the Rams will be trying to prevent Indianapolis from setting a team record with 8 straight road wins.
