NFL Spreads: St. Louis Rams at Jacksonville Jaguars
Written October 18, 2009 by Black Widow
Two struggling teams meet up in this non-conference clash when the 0-5 St. Louis Rams visit the 2-3 Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday, October 18th. The Rams lost 38-10 at home to the Minnesota Vikings last week, while the Jaguars suffered an even worse 0-41 setback at the Seattle Seahawks. How will these teams respond following their blowout defeats. Odds makers have listed an NFL spread of Jacksonville -9.5 over St. Louis with a Total Set of 43 points.
The Rams are in the midst of the worst losing streak in the NFL. It was exactly one year ago when St. Louis last tasted a victory, a 34-14 home win over the Dallas Cowboys. Since that win, the Rams have dropped 15 consecutive games. They haven’t really even been competitive this year with the exception of a 7-9 loss at Washington, as the Rams have been outscored 146-34 during their 5-game losing streak to start the 2009 season. The Rams have not beaten an AFC opponent since December 17th, 2006 which was a 20-0 win over the Oakland Raiders. The good news is that starting QB Marc Bulger returns after a two-week absence due to a bruised rotator cuff. The Rams did put up 400 total yards of offense against the Vikings last week which was, by far, their season high. But 4 turnovers cost St. Louis any chance of winning. If they are going to be competitive Sunday, expect a heavy dose of running back Steven Jackson who is fourth in the NFL with 451 rushing yards this season.

The Jaguars sit at 2-3, but they are coming off their worst loss in head coach Jack Del Rio’s seven-year tenure with the team. Nothing went right in a 0-41 loss at Seattle last weekend, but fortunately they get to face the winless Rams to try and get back on track this Sunday. In fact, this is the first of three straight winless opponents the Jaguars will face with the Titans and Chiefs up next. Jacksonville had been explosive offensively in two games leading up to Seattle, scoring 68 points against Houston and Tennessee, both victories. Both WR Mike Sims-Walker and LB Quentin Groves were inactive last week with off-the-field problems, which didn’t help the Jaguars’ cause. In their final 10 drives against the Seahawks, the Jaguars had 7 three-and-outs, 2 fumbles and a failed fourth-down attempt. Maurice Jones-Drew was held to just 34 yards on 12 carries, but expect him to be the focal point of the offense as Jacksonville is clearly most effective the more he touches the ball. Tory Holt goes up against his former team, and he’s coming off a 95-yard performance against the Seahawks with 7 receptions.
