The NFL’s Top 5 Quarterbacks 2009
Written July 30, 2009 by Jack Jones
Tom Brady – New England Patriots: I’m expecting Brady to come back in full force in 2009 after missing last season with a torn ACL. How quickly we forget that just two years ago he tossed 50 touchdowns, has a 117.2 quarterback rating, and led the Patriots through a perfect regular season all the way to the Super Bowl. Now, it’s not likely that he can match those record breaking numbers, but he still has a great core offense around him and is currently the favorite to win the NFL’s 2009 MVP award.
MVP Odds: +400
Peyton Manning – Indianapolis Colts: There is a lot of pressure on Peyton Manning this year. He finished last year strong, but a lackluster start ranked him just 5th in QB rating at the end of the 2008 season. Marvin Harrison is gone for good, Tony Dungy is out, and Addai is coming off of knee surgery. He still has Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark as solid options, but this offense is going to rely even more on Manning that it has in the past few years. This should mean big numbers for Peyton, who is currently listed just behind Tom Brady in the NFL odds to win the MVP this upcoming season.

MVP Odds: +600
Philip Rivers – San Diego Chargers: Rivers led all quarterbacks with a 105.5 passer rating last year, and had 34 touchdowns, which also tied for the league lead. With LaDanian Tomlinson off and on during last season, Rivers took over the offense and threw for over 4,000 yards. The Chargers proved they could be effective on offense without LT, which means that, even if Tomlinson is healthy, they will likely call on the arm of Rivers nearly as much as they did last season. Rivers is a long-shot to win the MVP, but his numbers should stack up with any other QB on this list.
MVP Odds: +1600
Kurt Warner / Kerry Collins (Tie): Both are coming off improbable, yet incredible seasons. This year it will be interesting to see how much slack they are given by their head coaches if they aren’t producing right out of the gates. Both went to the playoffs last year, with Warner making it all the way back to the Super Bowl with the Arizona Cardinals. I’m not saying these guys have the best ability in the league, I’m just saying that they continue to win games in just about any situation they are thrown into. It’s time to start giving these elder statesmen some respect.
MVP Odds: +1400
Donavon McNabb – Philadelphia Eagles: McNabb is by far one of the best athletes at the quarterback position. Philly is hungry for a Super Bowl, and they tend to put all of their expectations on McNabb. He holds up, for the most part, but he will always have a monkey on his back if he’s not able to bring a Super Bowl Championship to Philadelphia. His window is closing fast, but, coming into this season, the Eagles have one of the best overall teams in the NFL, at least on paper. We’ll see if Donavon can help deliver this fall.
MVP Odds: +1400
