North Carolina at Boston College Odds

Written November 17, 2009 by Rock Henderson

A resurgent 7-3 North Carolina Tar Heel team will battle a 7-3 Boston College squad in a game that will improve bowl positioning for both teams with a win. BC still has a shot to win the Atlantic division of the ACC if Virginia can upset Clemson this weekend and they take care of business against UNC. The Tar Heels come into this match-up on a roll as they have won three straight including wins over nationally ranked Virginia Tech and Miami. This game should be all about defense as North Carolina’s is one of the fastest in the nation, while the Eagles D can grind it out with the best of them. BC is a 3 point favorite in front of the home crowd according to our NCAA football betting lines.

UNC faithful had to be wondering what was going on after their talented Tar Heels dropped their first three ACC games. It only takes one game for a season to turnaround and that game came at Virginia Tech when the Heels were able to take down the powerful Hokies on the road and have since evened their conference record at 3-3. QB Tyler Yates has improved his play in the last four games as he has thrown four touchdown passes and just two interceptions. He isn’t a huge threat to make big plays down the field, but has done a nice job managing the offense and taking care of the ball during the recent winning streak. RB Ryan Houston has taken over the starting duties as the primary ball carrier when Shaun Draughn went down with a season ending injury. The real story for the turnaround has been the ball hawking UNC defense. CB Kendric Burney picked off Miami QB Jacory Harris three times in the Heels 33-24 win last weekend and took one back for six. They are allowing just 16 ppg and DT Marvin Austin is the anchor of the talented unit. Their main focus will be on BC’s scat back Montel Harris as he has run wild against some good defensive units this year.  Open a new account with Bodog and get an unlimited 10% deposit bonus that you can use to do your college football betting this season.

Even Frank Spaziani probably didn’t imagine his BC team having a chance to play in the ACC title game in his first year as head coach. This team is known for overachieving and this season has been no different than past years. The Eagles found lightening in a bottle with 25 year old Dave Shinskie emerging as the starting quarterback after his pro baseball career fizzled. He has thrown for over 1500 yards and 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions. Sophomore RB Montel Harris has solidified himself as one of the top backs in the ACC rushing for over 1,000 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns with two games to play. He is small in stature, but runs with a purpose and has game breaking speed. WR Rich Gunnell has used his experience to snag 43 balls for 648 yards and five scores. He has been the main threat in the passing game and is always someone that opposing defenses have to pay attention to. Coach Spaziani had been the head of BC’s defense in the past and has carried over the success he had as a defensive coordinator to this year’s unit that is allowing just over 18 ppg.

This game is tough to call. Both teams are playing very well right now and are coming into this match-up with a lot of momentum. BC has surprised teams all year long and have had a lot of success at home. UNC is inconsistent and a tough team to read each week. The only side to play in this one is the Eagles at -3. Buy the hook if it jumps to 3.5. Play: Boston College -3
