North Carolina Tar Heels Odds to Win the 2008 NCAA Tournament

Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

The North Carolina Tar Heels are currently ranked #3 in the country and have rolled off 5 straight victories since the tough loss to the Duke Blue Devils at home. They are currently tied with Duke atop the ACC at 11-2, but the Blue Devils get the edge in the head to head battle. There is no doubt that North Carolina is sitting in great position to finish the season in the top 4 and have a great chance at getting a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Though it doesn’t seem that the Tar Heels have had that tough of schedule when you look at their resume, but it ends up being the 7th toughest schedule in the nation. Lets take a look at what the 2008 team brings to the table and the road they have left to the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels are led by one of the greatest coaches in the game in Roy Williams, who led North Carolina to a title in 2005. All-American center Tyler Hansbrough is one of the dominant players in the game. He currently is averaging 23.4 PPG and 10.5 RPG. Hansbrough not only has incredible talent, but also plays with as much emotion as any other college player. Guard Wayne Ellington has emerged as a big time threat on the offensive end of the floor scoring 16.8 PPG. The team has gone the last 6 games without start point guard Ty Lawson who was averaging 13.6 PPG and almost 6 APG. Quentin Thomas has done a pretty solid job in replacing Lawson, he doesn’t have the offensive abilities you get with Lawson, but does a good job distributing the ball as he has averaged 8 assists since Lawson went down. Danny Green is the only other player to average more than 10 PPG, but he has been inconsistent over the last month of the season.

The Tar Heels have three regular season games remaining and the ACC Tournament before the big dance. They should have no problem getting by both Boston College and Florida St. before they head to Durham, NC for a rematch with Duke. The team is expected to have Lawson back for the second go around with the Blue Devils, and should make a big difference as he was unable to play in the loss suffered just about a month ago. Even if the Tar Heels can get revenge on Duke, they will most likely meet again in the ACC Tournament Championship game. If North Carolina is able to win out we don’t think there is any question the will go in to the NCAA Tournament as a #1 seed. They might even be able to sneak in as a #1 seed with a loss to Duke depending on how the other top teams finish the season.

So the question comes up, can UNC cut down the nets in the final game of the season? We think the chances are pretty good. The key will be getting a healthy Lawson back from injury, as they need him to be the coach out on the floor. They also need a healthy Hansbrough, who wasn’t at a 100% last season when the team went down to Georgetown for a trip to the Final Four. If the Tar Heels are able to win out they will be a hard team to bet against when you start feeling out those brackets.
