North Carolina at Virginia Tech Betting Odds
Written October 29, 2009 by Rock Henderson
The ACC will take center stage on Thursday night when the North Carolina Tar Heels travel to Blacksburg, VA to clash with the Virginia Tech Hokies. Both teams are reeling in a sense as the Tar Heels have lost their first three ACC games and Virginia Tech was defeated at Georgia Tech their last time out to put themselves behind the 8-ball when it comes to reaching the ACC championship game. North Carolina has to be one of the more disappointing teams in the nation as they are loaded with talent, but seem to struggle with playing a consistent four quarters in all three facets of the game. Frank Beamer’s Hokies National Title hopes were dashed with a second loss this season and can only hope to win out and receive some help on the way to get a chance to play in the Orange Bowl. Va Tech is listed as a 16.5 point favorite according to our NCAA football lines.
Tar Heel head coach Butch Davis has to be wondering to himself where exactly the season to a turn for the worst as UNC opened the season with three straight victories. Most likely it happened when they managed a total of 10 points in back-to-back losses against Georgia Tech and Virginia. The offensive side of the ball has had its issues all season long. QB Tyler Yates has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns and is only averaging 146 yards passing per game. No passing game is a major reason why the running game has had minimal success. Shaun Draughan is the team’s leading rusher with just over 480 yards gained from scrimmage. Ryan Houston has been a goal line specialist and has a team leading seven touchdowns rushing. Freshman WR Eric Highsmith has been one of the few bright spots on offense as he has caught 19 balls for 295 yards and two scores. The defense has played well for most of the season, but allowed 24 points to Florida State in the second half alone that led to a 30-27 loss. They have been put in tough situations all year long, but have managed to collected 13 turnovers through seven games. It’s time to get serious about betting college football with a $500 match bonus from BetUS.
Hokie nation knows that it could have taken complete control of the Coastal division in the ACC with a win at Georgia Tech a couple weeks ago. Instead, they went down 28-23 and the Yellow Jackets now hold the tiebreaker if both teams win out. True freshman RB Ryan Williams has been the talk of the town. His 834 yards rushing and ten touchdowns have earned him ACC freshman of the week five times so far this season. He has more than adequately filled the shoes of star RB Daren Evans, who was lost for the season due to injury. QB Tyrod Taylor was mainly known for his running ability before the start of the 2009 season, but has quietly put together nice numbers in the passing game also. His 3 to 1 ratio in touchdowns to interceptions is a sign that he is making great strides as a first year starter and while 165 yards per game isn’t eye popping, it is a nice improvement from last year when he was used mainly to run the ball from the quarterback position.
North Carolina is reeling after their loss at home against FSU with NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor on the sidelines. They can still become bowl eligible with two more wins, but this isn’t going to one of those games they can win. Virginia Tech will have two weeks to prepare for the Tar Heels and will still have the loss at Georgia Tech on their mind. Beamer’s squad has shown that they are capable of covering a large number. Play: Virginia Tech -16.5
