North Texas College Football Predictions 2009
Written July 30, 2009 by InfoPlays
Head coach Todd Dodge expected it would take a while to get across his philosophies and to impart the desired attitude. Well, it’s time. The North Texas Mean Green needs to at least show this season it can be competitive, something that has yet to be seen under Dodge. It starts with improvement on defense from a unit that gave up 47.6 points/game, which ranked 119th in the country. Ready to check out college football odds for the upcoming season? Offense: Dodge promised an explosive offense when he came here, but he has yet to deliver in two seasons. The possibility exists this season with seven returning starters and a new quarterback in redshirt freshman Riley Dodge, the coach’s son. He has been running this offense since he scrambled out of his crib. While lacking ideal size at the position, Dodge combines tremendous athletic ability with intelligence and competitiveness. The Mean Green could use all three from the former Texas Longhorns commit. Dodge should jumpstart the offense, and senior back Cam Montgomery should keep it humming. Montgomery rushed for 928 yards and nine touchdowns in 2008.
The running backs will seek holes from an offensive line that returns intact. Leading the way is Esteban Santiago, a two-year starter at tackle. Also returning is Kelvin Drake, a 2007 all-conference second-teamer who missed last season with an ankle injury. J.J. Johnson emerged at center in the spring, moving Drake to guard. One of the biggest problems is replacing record-setting receiver Casey Fitzgerald. He carried the load offensively last year, compiling 113 catches for 1,119 yards and six touchdowns. The Mean Green will look to a fleet of players, including transfers Jamaal Jackson, Michael Outlaw and Tyler Stradford. Jackson is a quick inside receiver who has a ton of wiggle to shake loose from defenders. 6-2 Stradford gives Dodge a big red-zone target, as does returning starter Sam Robertson.

Defense: North Texas surrendered a staggering 47.6 points and 482.6 yards/game last season, both numbers that ranked dead-last in the nation. Things could have been worse. They were outscored 367-123 in the first half by opposing teams before they eased up. Best among the eight returning starters is senior linebacker Tobe Nwigwe, who led the team with 111 tackles and three interceptions. Also returning is junior linebacker Craig Robertson, who was second with 94 stops, and senior linebacker/safety Kylie Hill. The linebacking corps figures to be the strength of the defense.
Junior college transfers will be counted upon to make immediate contributions. Possibilities here include tackle Shavod Atkinson, tackle Kelvin Jackson and end John Weber. Eddrick Gilmore spent time at tackle and end last season, but he has settled in to a starting end position in 2009. Brandon Akpunku shifts from linebacker to end to team up with Gilmore as a pair of playmakers who can get to the quarterback. In the secondary, senior corner Antoine Bush brings the most experience, though he’ll be challenged by Adryan Adams for starting dutes. Royce Hill took some bumps along the road in his freshman campaign, but he improved dramatically in the second half and should retain his starting cornerback spot this fall. DaWaylon Cook shifts from corner to free safety to fill that void.
