2009 Northern Trust Open Betting Picks & Predictions
Written February 17, 2009 by Jason Lowry

This week golfers will be heading to the old and very difficult Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California for the 2009 Northern Trust Open. Its been a pretty easy start for golfers this season, as a number of the courses played so far have been loaded with birdie opportunities, but that won’t be the case this week when a packed field attacks the narrow fairways and small greens of Riviera. The defending Champion is Phil Mickelson, but his play has been no where near his standards to start the season, and that leaves the door pretty much wide open for a number of great golfers to cash in this weekend. Here is a look at 3 golfers I personally feel have the best shot at coming out and winning this weekend.
Mike Weir +2000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
There is a lot to like about Weir this weekend, as few golfers have had a better start to the 2009 season than this guy. Though he doesn’t have a win under his belt, he has finished 2nd and 3rd this year, and the most important thing is he knows how to win here at Riviera, as he won this tournament first in 2003 and then defended his title with a win in 2004. Weir has not only struck the ball well to start the season, but he his putting has been on, and seems to be scoring when given the chance. We expect a very strong outing from Weir, and he is our overall favorite to win this week.
Zach Johnson +2500 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
We were right on when we thought Zach Johnson was going to play well in Hawaii when he took home the Sony Open earlier this year, and we once again think that his game is well suited for action this week. Johnson has also had a great start to the 2009 season with another top 10 finish to go along with his win. If Johnson is on with his irons this guy is going to be right in the thick of things come Sunday afternoon, and don’t worry Johnson has yet to miss a cut here at Riviera.
Charles Howell III + 5000 odds to win at Sportsbook.com
Howell III is our sleeper pick this week, as his odds show that oddsmakers aren’t counting on him to come through with a very strong performance, but if you look a little closer, this just might be the right course at the right time for this guy. Howell has never missed a cut here at Riviera, and was the guy who took down Phil Mickelson in a playoff for the win in 2007. Besides his first place finish he has 3 other top 10 finishes at this course, and has had a pretty good start to the 2009 season that includes a 4th place finish at the Sony Open. If you are looking for great value Howell is definitely your guy.
