Notre Dame vs Kentucky

This Wednesday No.23 Notre Dame will face off against No. 16 Kentucky in the SEC/Big East Invitational. Even though Kentucky is rated higher in the standings, it is Notre Dame that comes into the game with a perfect 8-0 record. The game will be played at Freedom Hall, the former home court of the Louisville Cardinals. Freedom Hall is just about an hour from Kentucky’s campus, so look for the majority of the crowd to be cheering for the Wildcats.
Notre Dame brings a ton of experience to the table, as they start an all-senior lineup that knows what it takes to win these types of games. Ben Hansbrough leads the Irish in scoring with a 15.8 average. Tim Abromaitis, Tyrone Nash, and Charleton Scott all average at least 11 points and seven rebounds a game.
Notre Dame really looked impressive winning the Old Spice Classic. The Fighting Irish rolled off wins over Georgia, California, and Wisconsin, and looked good in each game. While there is no question that the Irish know they can win this game, beating Kentucky will be no easy task, and this team is going to have to play one of their best games of the year to win. Notre Dame has lost 10 straight at Freedom Hall, with their last win coming against Kentucky by in 1980.
Kentucky brings a young athletic bunch to the table, led by freshman forward Terrence Jones, who has really looked good in his first seven games. Jones comes into the game against Notre Dame, averaging 19 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, all of which lead the Wildcats this season. Notre Dame could provide a challenge for Jones, as they are very talented down low, starting three seniors at 6’7 or taller.
Kentucky started the season 4-0 with wins over the likes of Oklahoma and Washington. The Wildcats however have lost twice in their last three games, falling to Connecticut and North Carolina, two very solid teams.
I expect this game to be very close. This will definitely feel like a home game for the Wildcats, but with the experience that the Irish bring to the table, they should be able to withstand the crowd and make a game of it.
