Oakland Raiders at New York Giants NFL Odds

Written October 9, 2009 by Black Widow

The 1-3 Oakland Raiders head to the East Coast to take on the 4-0 New York Giants Sunday. It’s always tough for a team to travel across the country, and the numbers have proven it throughout the years. That’s why the NFL lines set by odds makers have installed the Giants as 15.5-point favorites to beat Oakland this weekend. If you like over/unders then the Total Set is at 37.5 points.

Eli Manning’s streak of 82 straight games started is in jeopardy this weekend. He is listed as probable right now, so chances are he’ll continue his third-longest active streak among starting quarterbacks. The Giants have won three straight road games since beating Washington at home in their opener, but they finally return home to show off the league’s top-ranked defense in front of their fans. Manning did not practice Wednesday and Thursday due to the plantar fascia he suffered in their 27-16 road win at Kansas City last week. Even at less than 100 percent, there’s no question the Giants should be able to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1990, a season where New York started 10-0. Defensively, the Giants are allowing a league-low 232 yards/game and they are up against an Oakland offense that has mustered an average of just 209 yards/game this season.

The Raiders have scored just 9 points the last two weeks, a 3-23 home loss to the Broncos and a 6-29 road loss to Houston. QB JaMarcus Russell has completed a league-worst 43% of his passes. Oakland is a power-running team anyway, but Darren McFadden is now out two to four weeks after getting surgery on his knee to repair torn cartilage earlier this week. That puts this offense in an even bigger hole. The defense hasn’t played terrible this season, but they’ve been put in a lot of tough spots because the offense cannot move the chains and stay on the field consistently. They’ll have their hands full with the league’s leading receiver in Steve Smith, who has 34 catches for 411 yards on the season. Star CB Nnamdi Asomugha will be up to the challenge for the Raiders as one of the best cover corners in the game. Then there’s Brandon Jacobs, who is getting it going after rushing for 92 yards in back-to-back games. The only chance the Raiders have in this game is if Eli Manning cannot go, but it appears the Giants’ signal caller is going to be out there this Sunday.
