Oakland Raiders at Jacksonville Jaguars Line

This Sunday the Oakland Raiders will look to feed off their impressive win against the San Diego Chargers when they go on the road to take on the AFC South leading Jacksonville Jaguars. Few people were even giving the Raiders a chance to keep it close against the Chargers, but Oakland dominated the game from the start, winning 28-13 on the road. The Jaguars also went on the road and came away with a win, as they downed division rival Tennessee 17-6 for their fourth win in their last five games., and now lead the South by a full game over the Colts. If you are thinking about betting on the game this weekend, the current odds have the Jaguars favored by 5-points over the Raiders at home.

Oakland (6-6): With the win over the Chargers last week, the Raiders improved to 4-0 in the AFC West, but still trail the Chiefs by two games. Oakland put on a dominant display on the ground, as they ran for 251 yards on 52 attempts. Darren McFadden had 97 yards and a touchdown, and Michael Bush had 95 yards and a score. No other team had rushed for more than 71 yards against the Chargers on their home field this season. Jacksonville has been strong against the run this season, as they just held Titan’s running back Chris Johnson to 53 yards on 13 carries.

With all the success the Raiders were having running the ball, quarterback Jason Campbell had to attempt just 16 passes the entire game. Campbell completed 10 passes for 117 yards and a score, but most importantly took care of the football and didn’t throw any interceptions. The Jaguars pass defense has struggled at times this year, and if the running game struggles, it could be up to Campbell to keep the Raiders in the game.

Jacksonville (7-5):
Few people expected the Jaguars, including myself, to be leading the AFC South after 12 games in the season, but with all the injuries the Colts have suffered, Jacksonville is in the drivers seat to get back to the postseason. Running back Maurice Jones-Drew is a big reason the Jaguars are winning games late in the season. Jones-Drew has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the last five games, including 186 yards against the Titans last week. The Raiders rank just 23rd in the league against the run, allowing nearly 125 yards a game, and you can expect the Jaguars to keep feeding it to Jones-Drew the rest of the way.

Quarterback David Garrard hasn’t been asked to do much over the last couple of games with the way the running game has been working, and will likely not be asked to do a whole lot this week , unless Jones-Drew struggles. Garrard is battling a wrist injury, but there are no signs of him not playing this week. The Raiders  rank ninth in the league against the pass, so don’t expect much from Garrard even if the Jaguars need him to air it out.

Looking at the Odds: With both teams focused on running the football, I think this is going to be a very close game, and that has me leaning on the Raiders at +5. The Raiders rushing attack is very similar to that of the Kansas City Chiefs, who ran for 236 yards in a 42-20 win over the Jaguars back in week 7. This is also the perfect time to fade Jacksonville, as they are likely looking ahead to their game at Indianapolis in week 15. My final score prediction is Oakland 24, Jacksonville 23.
