2011 Oakland Raiders Schedule
Written by Steve Janus
You can look at the Oakland Raiders 2010-11 NFL season two different ways. The Raiders finished the season 8-8 overall, which was the first time they finished at .500 or better since winning the division at 11-5 back in 2002. They also went 6-0 against their division rivals in the AFC West, but wound up just third in the division and are the only team to go undefeated in their division and miss the playoffs. So while they have to be excited about the progress they have made, there also has to be a ton of disappointment. Either way this is a team that finally appears to be headed in the right direction, and ready to compete for a division title.
The Raiders only two wins outside of their division came against the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers, two teams that combined to go 11-21 last year. Improving against the rest of the league could be a challenge, especially considering how easy their schedule was last year. Looking at their 2011-12 schedule their 10 games outside of the AFC West has them facing the AFC East, NFC North, Houston Texans, and the Cleveland Browns.
While you have to think the Raiders will finish better than 2-8 in their games outside of the AFC West, you also have to think that they won’t go 6-0 against their division rivals again this season. I think the Raiders will be favored in their three home games, and dogs in their 3 road games. I could easily see the Raiders going from 6-0 against the West to 2-4, but 3-3 is where I have them right now.
In the Raiders four games against the AFC East they have to go on the road to take on the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, while getting the New England Patriots and New York Jets at home. This doesn’t favor the Raiders at all. Beating the Patriots or Jets would be a tough task for this team regardless of the location, so getting them at home doesn’t really benefit them. While the Raiders could win both road games against the Dolphins and Bills, I could see them losing both of these games and going 0-4 against the East.
The schedule gets a little better in their four games against the NFC North. Oakland gets the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions at home, while having to go on the road to take on the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. Oakland has the talent to win both home games against the Bears and Lions, but neither game will be easy. They also figure to have a great shot at beating the Vikings on the road, but winning in Green Bay would be a huge surprise.
In their two games against the Browns and Texans, teams who also finished 3rd in their division out of the AFC, also figure to be a challenge. The Raiders will likely be dogs in their road game against the Texans, a team that could be on the verge of really turning things around this season. They more than likely will be favored at home against the Browns, but Cleveland is no longer an easy win on the schedule.
