Odds on 2009 All-Star Weekend
Written February 13, 2009 by Jack Jones
If you love NBA betting so much that you do not want to take a break this weekend then Sportsbook.com might be the book for you. They have listed NBA odds on everything to do with All-Star weekend, from the slam dunk contest, the 3-point shootout, and even the skills challenge. Of course you can bet on the actual All-Star game too, but you would have to wait an extra day for that. So just who is favored to win each of these competitions?
Slam Dunk Contest
The favorite is returning star Dwight Howard at -150 who was last year with his superman routine. He was kind of a surprise last year since he’s so tall, and this event has normally been won by smaller players. In fact, Howard is the largest ever to win the contest. JR Smith and Nate Robinson are showing solid value at +350 each, while Rudy Fernandez is the underdog at +500.
3-Point Shootout
The favorite is Jason Kapono at +200, largely due to the fact that he has won the event the last two years and is trying to become just the third player along with Larry Bird and Craig Hodges to win three times overall. He’s made 42% of his shots behind the arc this year on 147 attempts, but the player hitting the highest rate is the underdog, Roger Mason at +550. He’s made 109 of 243 3-pointers for 45%. You have to kind of consider that Kapono and Mason get more open looks than guys like Danny Granger (40% on 337 attempts), Mike Bibby (41% on 293 attempts) and Rashard Lewis (41.5% on 354 attempts). All three of those guys are listed at +350 to win the event. Also the heavy underdog, Daequan Cook is at +550 after making 41% of his 275 attempts.
Skills Challenge
For the skills challenge Tony Parker leads the way at -120, followed by Devin Harris and Derrick Rose at +200. You have to think Parker should be a heavier favorite as he is the only real veteran, but who knows with this event.
If you are looking to bet on any of these events, then Sportsbook.com not only has easy deposit methods using your debit or credit card, but also will give you a 100% bonus on your first winning wager!

I think this year 3pt contest will be taken by Danny Granger or Lewis….

Definitely hard not to like Grainger at +350, but I also think Mason shows some solid value at +550. Not that he’s going to win, but I think he’s got better than a 1-in-6 chance.

Agree!! he has been awesome for the Spurs hitting those 3’s but i just can see him handling the pressure of his first contest…

Great point on the pressure of the first event, with some other stars in the contest he might be a little nervous. I think that’s why he’s the biggest underdog, but I thought you couldn’t play for the Spurs unless you had ice in your veins? The pressure, my thoughts above about how he gets more open looks than a guy like Bibby or Granger, and 90% of the public who don’t go deep into the stats not knowing who he is have to be why he’s not getting more credit.

Indeed he’s a player to be aware of in that department and actually most people not even knowing who and what can he do, still i think we most give him so good credit for making the 3pt contest this year…

I think JR Smith would be my pick in the dunk contest as well. I still remember Nate Robinson just pissing me off when he kept missing his dunks.

On bodog, I took Mo Williams (11/4) for Skills contest, Roger Mason (5/1) for 3-pointers, and JR Smith (15/4) for slam-dunk contest. Good luck everyone!
