Odds on 2009 MLB Season

Written by

ryan-howard-home-runsI know we are knee deep in all the hoopla that surrounds March Madness, but that also means that the start of the 2009 MLB season is just around the corner.  I can hardly wait to get started betting on baseball this year as I think it’s going to be another profitable summer on the basepads.  Let’s take a look at what some of the odds are for home runs, RBIs, runs, and hits this year.

Most Home Runs By Any Player – The line on this one is set at 47.5.  Ryan Howard has bombed 48, 47, and 58 home runs the last three years and cranked out the most in 2008 and 2006 while coming in third behind Alex Rodriguez’s 54 and Prince Fielder’s 50 in 2007.  Even in the post-steroid era of baseball, you have to lean towards the over here based off of the last couple of years.  See the complete odds on who hits the most home runs.

Most RBIs By Any Player
– This line is set at 146.5, which seemed high to me at first glance before considering Howard hitting 146 a year ago, Rodriguez’s 156 in 2007 and Howard’s 149 in 2006.  Howard still has a nice lineup in front of him that will get on base, but with Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers finishing second in this category last year with only 130, I would lean towards the under.

Most Runs By Any Player
– The experts in the desert have this leader pegged at over/under 129.5.  Last year Hanley Ramirez crossed the plate 125 times, followed by Dustin Pedroia’s 118 and Carlos Beltran’s 116.  Back in 2007 Rodriguez led all MLB players with 143 runs scored, following by Jimmy Rollins’s 139.  Back in 2006 it was Grady Sizemore who had 134 runs and was ahead of Chase Utley’s 131 and Beltran’s 137.  I’d say history points to the over here.

Most Hits By Any Player – The bar here is set at 219.5 and the player you have to look for is Ichiro Suzuki.  He has been the sole leader or tied for the league lead the past three seasons.  Last year it was Ichiro and Pedrio leading the way with 213, while he had 238 in 2007 and 224 in 2006.  Ichiro isn’t getting any younger, so I see his totals decreasing and the under being a solid play here.
