Odds to Win the NCAA Champsionship: Final Four Edition

Written March 30, 2009 by Steve Janus

odds-to-win-ncaa-tournment-final-four-033009With this year’s Final Four set to play this upcoming Saturday, BetUS has released updated odds to win the 2009 National Championship.  There aren’t any big surprises here, but before you throw your hard-earned money down on North Carolina to win it all, keep in mind that you’re looking for the best value on your bet, which may or may not be the Tar Heels.  Here’s a look at the updated odds for each team to win the NCAA Championship.

North Carolina Tar Heels -125 The Tar Heels came into the NCAA tournament as the odds-on favorite to win it all.  With this year’s Final Four set, they are still significant favorites to win the championship.  UNC has been dominating in the tournament so far and it is hard to imagine anyone knocking them off if they can maintain their level of play.  Carolina plays Villanova for a chance to play in the title game and the Tar Heels have already been slated as 7.5 point favorites against the ‘Cats.

Connecticut Huskies +225 UConn got labeled the weakest #1 seed in the tournament, but they’ve proved their detractors wrong with impressive victories throughout the big dance.  The Huskies are the second “favorite” to win the championship of the Final Four teams, but they have the dubious task of facing the red hot Michigan State Spartans who will have the support of the entire state of Michigan behind them in Saturday’s showdown.

Michigan State Spartans +525 I think it is safe to say that the majority of NCAA tournament followers are surprised to see Michigan State in the Final Four.  There was always the possibility they would make it to the Elite 8, but once they ran into Louisville their tournament would certainly be over.  Instead of fulfilling that prophecy, the Spartans played inspired defense and balanced offense to gain entry to the Final Four.  With Saturday’s games to be played in Detroit, the Spartans get a unique boost to their motivation to make the championship round.

Villanova Wildcats +700 Nova has had to work for every ounce of respect they’ve gotten throughout the tournament.  It took a last-second shot to get by Pitt, but the Wildcats just keep finding ways to win.  They’ve had a difficult road to the Final Four and things certainly don’t get any easier with North Carolina coming up.  At 7 to 1 Villanova is considered the biggest long shot to win the NCAA Tournament of the four remaining teams.
