Odds to Win the 2009 Kentucky Derby

The 2009 Kentucky Derby is just around the corner and now is the time to start getting your bets in. This is the most prestigious event in horse racing and throwing a little money around will only add to the enjoyment. But first you must understand the Odds to Win the 2009 Kentucky Derby before actually placing a wager. That’s why I’m here to help you get a better understanding and feel for what the odds actually mean.
The 2009 Kentucky Derby has the favorite listed at 3/1, I Want Revenge, and the biggest underdog listed at 50/1. There are currently five horses listed as 50/1 underdogs to win this event, also known as the longshots. These ponies are Mine That Bird, Join In The Dance, Atomic Rain, Summer Bird and Nowhere To Hide. Chances are none of these five horses are going to come in first, but anything can happen in this 20-horse field.
Now that you have a feel for which horse if the favorite, and which horses are the longshots, I’ll now show you how betting a Horse “To Win” works. We’ll say you bet $100 per horse. The favorite, I Want Revenge, is listed as a 3/1 favorite to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby. So you go up to your local Mutual betting station and say the teller that you want to place $100 on I Want Revenge to Win. If the favorite wins this year’s derby, then you will receive $400 back from the teller once the race is official. You would get your original bet of $100 back plus the $300 you actually won.
Say you want to bet one of the 50/1 longshots in such as Mine That Bird. You will place a $100 To Win wager and if this longshot comes through, you will be receiving $5,100 from the teller once the race becomes official. So you can see how tempting it can be to bet the longshot, but it’s usually one of the favorites that comes through in the Kentucky Derby. So basically if you want to know how much you will cash in if your horse wins, just multiply your bet by the first number in the set of odds listed. With a horse at 4/1 odds, you would multiply your bet times four. A $2 bet would profit you $8, a $10 bet would profit you $40, a $100 bet would profit you $400 and so on and so forth.
