Odds to Win 2009 AL West
Written by Jack Jones
If you are too excited to wait until the baseball season begins to start placing wagers, then you are in luck because there are plenty of futures options out there. The one that we are going to look at today are the odds to win the AL West.
Los Angeles Angels (-200) – Even without their dominant closer of year’s pas, Francisco Rodriguez, the Angels are head and shoulders above the rest of the division. Last year this team got way out in front of the rest and cruised into the playoffs, but they kind of fell flat during the postseason. It all starts with pitching and the Angels have a great staff with John Lackey, Jered Weaver, and Joe Saunders being three guys that can shut down the opposition. If Kelvim Escobar and Ervin Santana are healthy, this team also has quality depth in the rotation. The lineup can score runs too with the likes of Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter, Bobby Abreu and Chone Figgins.
Oakland Athletics (+225) – The second best team out West but I don’t know if they have enough offensive fire power to hang with the Angels. Their ace is also having arm problems as Justin Duchsherer finished with a 2.54 ERA a year ago, but hasn’t been healthy for much of his career. If someone doesn’t step up in the lineup this team won’t compete for the division.
Texas Rangers (+900) - See Oakland above, and then think the complete opposite. Take a look at their top two starters in Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla and their 5.07 and 4.74 respective ERAs and you’ll see why this team can’t win over the long haul. Still, with a potent lineup that has the likes of Josh Hamilton, Michael Young, and the up and coming Chris Davis the Rangers will be exciting to watch.
Seattle Mariners (+1000) – This team will find itself losing a lot of games yet again in 2009. Ken Griffey isn’t the same wonder kid that he was playing here ten years ago, and that was their biggest offseason acquisition. Ichiro is getting older, so you wouldn’t think he can keep stealing bases. The pitching staff after Felix Hernandez isn’t going to scare anyone either.
