Odds to Win the NCAA Tournament: Kansas Jayhawks
Written March 25, 2009 by Jay Horne
The Kansas Jayhawks won the National Championship just one year ago and they will attempt to defend their crown in 2009. Kansas was not expected to be perhaps as good as they have been this year. The Jayhawks were expected to have a rebuilding type season with a large group of young talent. However, Kansas has really played well the further the season has progressed. The Jayhawks overcame Oklahoma towards the end of the year to win the Big 12 regular season championship. The Jayhawks will battle Michigan State in the sweet sixteen and hope to pursue their 2nd National Title in two years. Kansas is listed as a 20 to 1 shot to win the NCAA Tournament this year.
Kansas has been effective in all aspects of the game. The Jayhawks have a strong 78 points per game average this season that ranks in the top 40 teams across the country. Kansas also has averaged 37 rebounds per game while shooting 48% as a team which both ranks inside the top 25 in America. The Jayhawks defense has posted solid numbers as well holding teams to a 5th best 38% from the floor and holding opponents to 65 points per game. The Jayhawks are a quick and young team that can rack up a lot of points in a hurry when they get hot. Kansas comes in off the game fresh off a dominating performance against Dayton where they took down the Flyers by score of 60-43.
Kansas enters the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen as 30/1 long shots to win the National Title. However, their profitable odds may be worth considering when taking in how well the Jayhawks have played over recent weeks. However, the Jayhawks were beaten by Michigan State who they will meet in the sweet sixteen by score of 75-62 earlier this season. Then again Kansas is not the same team they were earlier this year and they will look to prove that they can make a run at repeating their Championship. While many of these young players do not have the game experience, nearly all of these guys know what it takes to win the National Title and it will be up to them to see if they can achieve that accomplishment. Kansas has a number of weapons on the offensive side of the ball that will be trying to lead the Jayhawks to another title run. Kansas junior guard Sherron Collins has been the biggest impact player for the Jayhawks this season. Collins sports a stout 19 point average this season along with 5 assist not to mention Collins has averaged 29 points per game in his first two tournament appearance leading to the sweet sixteen. Center Cole Aldrich could also be a big component to the Jayhawks success in the upcoming days. Aldrich is a big center who can score points and dominate on the glass as well. Aldrich could hold the key to the Jayhawks success if he can manage to be effective inside the paint. The Jayhawks could take on two really strong rebounding teams in their next two matches if they were to beat Michigan State and Aldrich ability to grab rebounds could be the difference they need. The young star studded roster of Kansas may be considered a long shot to win the National Championship, but they are a team you must keep an eye on in March.
