Geoff Ogilvy Odds to Win the Masters

So much of the attention this week at the Masters will be on the return of Tiger Woods and his first major since coming back from knee surgery, but don’t forget about Geoff Ogilvy, who comes into the Masters playing arguably the most consistent golf out of anyone right now. Ogilvy has had an excellent start to the 2009 season, as he is currently first in both the FedEx Cup Points and the money list. Ogilvy really came onto the golf scene back in 2005 finishing in the top 10 in both the British Open and the PGA Championship to end the season. The following year was where he got his first big win at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and then followed that up with an even bigger win at the US Open. Ogilvy hasn’t finished better than 6th since that US Open win, including a real bad finish to the 2008 season, missing the cut at the British Open and then finishing tied for 31st at the PGA Championship.Â
If winning the Accenture Match Play Championship is any sign to a big year for Ogilvy, then his odds of winning a major just went up, as Ogilvy took home his 2nd career Match Play title earlier this season. That isn’t all Ogilvy has been able to do this year, as he started off the season with a win at the Mercedes-Benz Championship and finished tied for 6th last week at the Shell Houston Open. A big reason for Ogilvy’s great start to the season, is Ogilvy is leading everyone in putting average this season, and that has allowed him to make up for averaging driving (105th overall). Ogilvy also leads the tour in birdies per round, and a big reason for that is he has been pretty solid with his irons, currently ranked 37th in greens in regulation. Everything looks good for Ogilvy heading into the Masters, but it’s not been to easy for Ogilvy at the Masters so far in his career. Bet Masters at Sportsbook.com.
Ogilvy’s best finish at the Masters is a tie for 16th back in 2006, his first ever start at Augusta. Ogilvy has continued to decline since that mediocre finish, finishing tied for 24th in 2007 and tied for 39th a year ago. At last year’s Masters Ogilvy really didn’t play well all weekend, as he only broke par one time in his four rounds of play. Augusta is not an easy course to master, and you have to think the more time this guy spends on Tour, the better he will be suited to break through with a win here at this challenging course. I really expect Ogilvy to play well this year at the Masters, as this guy has done everything to make me believe he is legitimate threat to win in any major he tees up in. Ogilvy didn’t play anywhere near what he is capable of last week at the Shell Houston Open, and still finished in the top 10. The key for Ogilvy is just keeping his composure when things go wrong and getting as many chances to make birdies as possible. His putting should really help him stay right in the thick of things on Augusta’s fast greens. Don’t be shocked to see this guy right in the thick of things when the final round gets underway this Easter Sunday.Â

Got something to say?

I think Geoff Ogilvy has probably the best chance other than Woods. One interesting thing is that Ogilvy tried out the King Cobra S9-1, which is the company that pays him to play their clubs, so anything he says about it you have to take with a grain of salt. But he put that driver in his bag, and shortly after started winning. It’s hard to say how much a club can affect someone’s game, but I think it can give a confidence boost.
Thanks,
Bill
