Ohio 2009 College Football Predictions
Written July 22, 2009 by InfoPlays
The Ohio Bobcats are going to be changing identity on offense no matter who takes over at quarterback. In 2009, you will see more of a base-spread look. That’s not typical of Frank Solich, but it might be just the jolt Ohio needs to compete in the East. The Bobcats will have to score a lot of points to make up for a suspect defense. NCAA football odds are posted for the upcoming season. Check out Sportsbook.com where they post early and offer reduced Friday juice to all customers.
Offense: Senior quarterbacks Boo Jackson and Theo Scott grabbed headlines in the spring with their fierce quarterback competition. It might not matter who runs the offense, because in the end it’s everybody else who figures to be the engine of the offense. Frank Solich always wants to run the ball. He played fullback in the Big Eight and coached at Nebraska, but it’s time to try some new things. Instead of running between the tackles most of the game, he wants a mobile and elusive quarterback to emerge to make the offense more dynamic.
The teams’ top four running backs and receivers are back. Chris Garrett is elusive with speed. Garrett had a productive spring despite an offensive line that was crumbled to the point that the Bobcats couldn’t conduct a scrimmage with their seven healthy blockers. Garrett rushed 117 times for 529 yards and five touchdowns last season in a more limited role than he was used to. LaVon Brazill and Taylor Price were hampered by minor leg injuries in the spring, but both should be ready to go by fall as returning starters at receiver. That opened the door for Serggio Judkins and Riley Dunlop to emerge in the spring. This pair impressed so much that it has forced the team to work in more three-and-four wide receiver sets.

Defense: Ohio will do some shuffling on defense with six returning starters. But the clear playmaker of this group is sophomore middle linebacker Noah Keller. He put up impressive numbers as a freshman, totaling 104 tackles. Mark Parson and Michael Mitchell, who was a second-round NFL Draft pick, are out of the mix in the secondary. Solich is looking to develop multiple options to take their places and one of his leading choices in the spring came from cornerback Travis Carrie. He had no problem going man-up on the outside in spring ball.
Defensive back Donovan Fletcher, a two-way player in high school who arrived at Ohio in 2006 but didn’t play in the first two seasons, was one of the standouts in the spring game. Little is expected from the defensive line this season, but Solich has had a knack for producing success by polishing raw talent up front in the past.
