College Football Odds: Ohio State vs Purdue

Written October 15, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The Ohio State Buckeyes head to West Lafayette Saturday afternoon to face the Purdue Boilermakers. By record alone the two teams are complete opposites, with Ohio State sitting at 5-1 and Purdue sitting at 1-5 on the year. The Buckeyes had the one slip up at home versus USC in a game they could have easily won, but Purdue has had a difficult year ever since their opening day victory.

Ohio State is led by a swarming defense that is definitely one of the best defenses in the country. Last week the defense single-handedly won the game for them against Wisconsin. The defense is allowing just 12 points per game and already has two shutouts this season. The Buckeyes have a very strong defensive line, possibly the best in the country, which clogs up lanes for runners and puts a lot of heat on the opposing quarterback. Terrelle Pryor and the Ohio State offense are not nearly as far along as their defensive unit. The Buckeyes offense shows glimpses of greatness at times, but is very inconsistent and does absolutely nothing for large portions of games some of the time. Terrelle Pryor has already thrown more interceptions this year than he did last. Pryor is most definitely a great athlete, but right now he hasn’t shown that he is very impressive as a passing quarterback. The offensive line does seem to be improving slowly, which could help them as the year goes along.  Sign up for a new account at BetUS and deposit $500 or more for a $500 bonus you can use to bet on football this season!

Purdue has a new coach and a new quarterback this season, and at times their offense has appeared very good, but they make far too many mistakes that cost them dearly in big games. Joey Elliot is completing 60% of his passes and has thrown 12 touchdowns, but he also has 9 interceptions. Fumbles have also been a huge problem for the team, as they have lost 11 of them already this year. As a team Purdue has a turnover margin of -9 through 6 games, which is clearly putting them behind the eight ball. The offense is gaining 410 yards per game, but they need to convert more often. The defense has been pretty bad, especially against the run, where they average giving up 167 yards per game. The 30 points per game they give up won’t cut it in the long run either.

According to the latest college football betting lines, Ohio State is a 13.5 point road favorite in this Big 10 conference matchup. The posted total for this game has been set at 48 points. Ohio State is on a very impressive 9-1 run in their last 10 games against the spread. The Buckeyes are also 20-6 against the spread in their last 26 road games. The under is 38-17 in Purdue’s last 55 conference games. The under is 4-0-1 in the Buckeyes last 5 games as well.

Purdue will probably move the ball quite a bit, but I don’t know that they will put very many points on the board against this defense. The Buckeyes should be able to run the ball pretty well against the Purdue defense and that might open up the passing game later on in the game. The Buckeyes should cover the spread in this one.

“[Purdue's] defense has been pretty bad…”

Not particularly. Those turnovers have meant opposing offenses have often played with a short field and a lot of points have been scored on turnovers.

Purdue’s defense wears down over time, but so would many others facing so many snaps against them in a game.
