Oklahoma at Florida State Line

This Saturday the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners will go on the road to take on the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles in big time showdown between two title contenders. The Sooners opened the season with a 47-14 win over Tulsa, but were not in action last week. The Seminoles improved to 2-0 with their 62-10 win over Charleston Southern. Florida State is hoping to have a much better showing  after getting rolled by the Sooners 47-17 at Oklahoma last year.

Looking at the week 3 college football odds, oddsmakers have Oklahoma favored by 3.5-points over Florida State.

Oklahoma Sooners:

The Sooners really looked impressive in their week 1 win over Tulsa. Landry Jones completed 35 of 47 for 375 yards and touchdown. That lone touchdown toss went to star wide out Ryan Broyles, who finished the day with 14 catches for 158 yards.  Sophomore wide out Trey Franks also had a nice day catching the ball, hauling in seven passes for 74 yards.

Oklahoma also had a big day on the ground, rushing for 246 yards as a team. Junior running back Dominique Whaley led the way with 131 yards and four touchdowns on just 18 attempts, while sophomore Brennan Clay carried it 14 times for 64 yards and score.

The Sooners passed all over the Seminoles for 394 yards last year. Florida State comes in allowing the 4th fewest passing yards in the country at 77.5, but have played two cupcake teams. I look for the Sooners to have a lot of success moving the ball on offense, but they have to avoid turning the ball over in a tough environment, especially against a team as good as Florida State.

Florida State Seminoles:

The Seminoles have featured a pretty nice passing attack of their own behind junior starting quarterback E.J. Manuel.  In their last game over Charleston Southern, Manuel threw for 329 yards and four touchdowns.

12 different Florida State receivers caught a pass, with Rodney Smith and Kenny Shaw leading the way with fie catches a piece.  Bert Reed had just three catches for 21 yards, but two of those went for touchdowns.

Florida State finished with 170 yards on the ground, led by true freshman James Wilder’s 76 yards on 10 carries. It was an impressive debut, as he didn’t play in the opener against Louisiana-Monroe.

The Seminoles managed just 345 yards of total offense against the Sooners last year. It isn’t going to be easy to put up points on a very talented Oklahoma defense, but they did give up a couple of big pass plays for touchdowns (56 & 24) in their win over Tulsa. They also allowed Golden Hurricane to rush for 129 yards. If Florida State doesn’t score 20+ in this one, they are going to have a very difficult time winning this game.

Betting Trends:

Oklahoma is 13-5-1 ATS in their last 19 games in September and 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

Florida State is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games since losing to Oklahoma.

The OVER is 10-1 in Seminoles last 11 games as an underdog of 3.5-10.0, while the UNDER 5-1 in Sooners last 6 games as a road favorite of 3.5-10.0.
