Oklahoma at Miami Football Odds & Picks

Written September 30, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The Miami Hurricanes will cap off a brutal opening to the 2009 season with a prime time home game against the Oklahoma Sooners Saturday night. Sooner QB Sam Bradford’s status for this match-up is still unknown, but head coach Bob Stoops has stated he has been pleased by the progress Bradford has made in recent weeks.

Miami became the “it” team in the nation after wins against top 20 teams Florida State and Georgia Tech. The Canes’ took a step back last week though as they were physically punished by the Virginia Tech Hokies and fell 31-7.

Jacory Harris and the Hurricanes will look to bounce back against a Sooner team that has found its groove behind QB Landry Jones, who has done an adequate job replacing the Heisman Trophy winner. Looking at the latest college football lines for the game, Oklahoma is a 7 point favorite on the road while the over/under is set for 49 points.

College football experts were ready to deem “The U” back for good after their 33-17 thrashing of the then 14th ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Those so-called experts might be rehashing their comments after last Saturday’s debacle against Virginia Tech.

QB Jacory Harris looked human for the first time this season, completing only 9 of 25 passes for 150 yards and an interception in sloppy conditions that seemed to neutralize Miami’s speed. The sophomore has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Hurricanes through three games, throwing for over 800 yards and five touchdowns.

After holding the vaunted triple option attack of Georgia Tech to 95 yards rushing two weeks ago, Miami’s D was gashed for 272 yards against the Hokies. The Canes dropped nine spots to #18 in the polls after cracking the Top 10 for the first time since 2005.

Although the bandwagon might have fewer members going into the Oklahoma game, Miami has proven that it can play with the upper-echelon teams when firing on all cylinders.  Don’t miss out on this limited-time $500 match bonus from BetUS.  It’s for players that want to take their college football betting to the next level.

Oklahoma’s season got off to a rocky start to say the least. Losing All-American TE Jermaine Gresham for the year before the season even started was a blow to the team in itself, but watching Sam Bradford go down with a shoulder injury in the first half against BYU was Sooner nation’s worst nightmare.

Backup QB Landry Jones hoped to sit behind Bradford for another year while he got more comfortable with the system but was thrust into the spotlight opening week. Jones has played much better the past two games and still must be ready to face an athletic Miami defense in case Bradford is ruled out.

The Sooner’s will rely heavily on RBs DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown to shoulder much of the load if Jones is in fact the starter. Oklahoma’s defense has been flat out nasty this season, allowing only 14 points through three games. MLB Ryan Reynolds and DT Gerald McCoy lead one of the best defensive units in the nation.

The way to play this game is ultimately going to come down to if Bradford is healthy enough to play. Some trends to take into account. Miami is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games. Oklahoma is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall. If Bradford is ruled out and you can get Miami at +7 or more, go with the Canes.

Rock Henderson’s Play: Miami Hurricanes +7
