Oklahoma State 2009 Football Predictions

Written June 22, 2009 by InfoPlays

Oklahoma-State-2009-Football-PredictionsWith a Big Three in Robinson, Bryant and Hunter on offense, the sky is the limit for the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 2009 as far as scoring points is concerned. But new defensive coordinator Bill Young has a difficult task ahead in rebuilding this defense. He did it at Kansas and has the resources to do it again at OSU. At worst, the Cowboys will be wildly entertaining. At best, they will be able to go point-for-point with South powers Texas and Oklahoma. As we take a look at the college football odds, we see that Oklahoma State is listed at +5000 to win the National Title in the 2009-10 season.

Offense: After putting up 40.8 points/game last season, there is no reason the OSU offense should drop off considering their four most important players are back from the ‘08 squad. Senior Zac Robinson comleted 204 of 314 passes for 3,064 yards and 25 touchdowns. He is dangerous with his ability to run the ball, rushing for 562 yards and 8 touchdowns last year. He added 12 pounds of muscle during the offseason after taking a beating in the regular-season finale against Oklahoma and the bowl loss to Oregon. Robinson’s primary receiving target, junior Dez Bryant, is back after a ridiculous season with 87 catches for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns. This guy is, at times, unstoppable.

Bryant missed winter conditioning and all of spring practice because of a knee injury, but he expects to back back to 100 percent for an intriguing season opener against Georgia. Kendall Hunter rushed for 1,555 yards as a sophomore, a campaign in which he made several All-America lists. On the offensive line, All-Big 12 left tackle Russell Okung has made 34 consecutive starts. Okung is considered a potential first-round draft pick. OSU will miss tight end Brandon Pettigrew as well as a pair of three-years starters on the line. Still, there is enough experience up front to believe the Cowboys still have one of the game’s best rushing attacks.

Defense: New coordinator Bill Young has a kinder, simpler approach that players have fallen in love with. He is trying to improve what has been a substandard defense for years, and he’ll have a tall task ahead in replacing three starters in the secondary, and two more along the defensive line. The linebacking corps, which was the strength of last year’s defense, is back in tact to ease matters.

Orie Lemon started every game at middle linebacker and recorded 90 tackles last season. Patrick Lavine has made 25 consecutive starts on the weak side. Andre Sexton led the team with 100 tackles last season to earn second-team All-Big 12 honors. Perrish Cox is the only returning starters in the secondary. He’s a two-year starter and had a monster junior season, and now he’s projected as an NFL talent. Senior Terrance Anderson should finally get his shot at the other corner after making big plays in ‘08.
