Oklahoma State at Baylor Football Betting Lines

Written October 20, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

A few weeks ago this looked like it could be a matchup of two top notch quarterbacks, but unfortunately Baylor’s Robert Griffin sustained a season ending knee injury. The Baylor Bears went from a major contender to a team looking for an identity. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are back up to #12 in the country and they definitely need this win at Baylor this coming Saturday. The Bears could still make their way to the postseason, but they’ll need to get things together quickly.

The Baylor Bears were looking one of the real surprises of the season after their opening game win at Wake Forest. Super sophomore Robert Griffin was the key catalyst behind their success and his season ending knee injury seems to have really put a stop to the progress Baylor had been making. Blake Szymanski has seen most of the playing time at quarterback in the last couple of weeks, but his 1 touchdown to 4 interceptions ratio is just not getting it done. Freshman Nick Florence has also seen some playing time, but he really needs some time to develop. Last weekend’s game against Iowa State showed the struggles of the current Baylor offense. The Bears were only able to muster 10 points against a below par Iowa State football team. The Baylor defense has shown itself to be suspect against the run, allowing 183 yards per game on the ground.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys suffered a heartbreaking loss at home to Houston early this season, but they have bounced back and won some tough games to get back up to #12 in the country. Quarterback Zac Robinson is a great leader for the offense, with a great ability to take care of the football and move around in the pocket and make plays that most quarterbacks simply couldn’t make. Dez Bryant’s suspension certainly makes this team less dynamic offensively than it was, but they are still very good. Keith Toston often gets overlooked, but he is a very good tailback for the Cowboys. Toston averages 5.2 yards per carry and leads a pretty successful rushing attack. The Cowboys defense has allowed quite a few yards this year, but in recent games they have done much better at forcing their opponents to 3 points instead of 7.

Based on the latest NCAA football lines for this game, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are 9.5 point road favorites in this Big 12 matchup. Oklahoma State is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 matchups against the Baylor Bears. Baylor is 8-3 in their last 11 versus the spread, but this is a different team without Robert Griffin.

This Saturday is the 100th homecoming anniversary for the Baylor Bears so you may see some very inspired football from the Bears, especially at the start of the game. In the long run I expect Zac Robinson and the Cowboys offense to get rolling quite nicely and put up far too many points for the offensively challenged Baylor Bears to be able to keep up. The Cowboys should cover the spread in this one.
