Oklahoma State vs Georgia Tech

In one of the biggest toss-up games of the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, the 7-seed Oklahoma State Cowboys take on the 10-seed Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the Midwest Region. You just have to look at the odds to see what I mean, as they have installed Oklahoma State -1.5 over Georgia Tech.
Oklahoma State may have gotten a bit of a generous seed here after going 22-10 this season, and 9-7 in Big 12 action. They were crushed in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament by Kansas State. What they have to fall back on is the fact that they have a few players in this year’s team that played in the NCAA Tournament last year, winning their opening round game. This team can do some damage because they have unanimous Big 12 Player of the Year in James Anderson, who averaged 22.6 PPG, 5.8 RPG and 1.3 steals/game. They also have two other players scoring in double figures and five guys putting up at least 8.3 points/game. This team can score points at will, but their biggest weakness is their inability to defend consistently. Also depth is an issue, so if they get in foul trouble early like they did against K-State in the Big 12 Tourney, they could be in trouble.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets played their way into the NCAA Tournament by making the ACC Championship game in their conference tournament, eventually losing a close one to Duke by a final of 65-61. They put an emphasis on defense in the ACC Tourney, and it paid major dividends as they earned an at-large berth into the Big Dance with a 22-12 record and 7-9 mark in conference play. The Yellow Jackets have as much talent on their roster as almost any team in the field, but it’s young talent. ACC Rookie of the Year in freshman Derrick Favors put up 22 points in the ACC title game, and he’s averaging 12.5 PPG and 8.5 RPG this season. Gani Lawal is also a phenom, scoring 13.1 PPG and grabbing 8.7 RPG. Iman Shumpert is a solid guard, scoring 10.1 PPG with 4.0 assists/game and 1.9 steals/game. This trio could take the Yellow Jackets on a ride in the NCAA Tournament if they can avoid the jitters that most inexperienced teams get, because this is a very talented group of players.
Got something to say?
