Oklahoma vs Texas Football Odds
Written October 14, 2009 by Rock Henderson
The Red River Rivalry always lives up to its billing when the third ranked Texas Longhorns hook up with the 20th ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Oklahoma comes into the game in unfamiliar territory after dropping two of its first five games. QB Sam Bradford was missing for much of the first loss and all of the second at Miami. The Heisman winner returned against Baylor, where he led his Sooners to a 33-7 victory. Texas is doing its part to stay in the national title picture, but their lackluster performance against Colorado dropped them to third in the most recent rankings behind Florida and Alabama. The Longhorns are listed as 3.5 point favorites according to our live football lines.
Many were under the impression that Sam Bradford and tight end Jermaine Gresham should have entered the NFL draft after their third year in the college ranks was completed. When both announced they were returning, Oklahoma became instant title contenders once again in 2009. Gresham was lost for the year before the season even got underway and Bradford was hurt in the first half against BYU in the opener. The Sooners leaned on red shirt freshman QB Landry Jones and lost two of their next four games. Bradford’s return against Baylor was a nice scrimmage to prepare for the big game against Texas. The junior quarterback threw for over 350 yards and a touchdown in his first game back. Running backs Demarco Murray and Chris Brown provide a nice 1-2 punch on the ground. The two have combined for almost 750 yards and six touchdowns. Oklahoma might get WR Ryan Broyles back from injury which will be an added boost to an already dangerous passing attack. Texas has gone about their business in a very discrete way this season after being pegged as a front runner for the national title. Senior Colt McCoy seems like he has been in the Longhorn program for ages. He has thrown for 1410 yards and 10 scores through five games. Texas has yet to find a running back to replace Jamaal Charles. Vondrell Mcgee and Tre Newton have split time in backfield and ran for over 600 yards and six scores. Both backs are questionable for this week’s game as they suffered minor concussions against Colorado. Senior wideout Jordan Shipley is averaging almost 10 catches per game as it is fitting that McCoy’s roommate is also his favorite target on the field. Shipley is also extremely dangerous in the return game as his 74 yard punt return for a score last weekend showcased that. McCoy and company moved the ball with ease against the Sooner defense a year ago in their 45-35 victory at the Cotton Bowl. Oklahoma’s defense returns nine starters from last year’s defense that allowed 438 total yards. The Longhorn running game seemed to get on track when Sooner MLB Ryan Reynolds suffered an injury.
Since 1998, every game between these two has been decided by double digits except for Oklahoma’s seven point win in 2007. Texas has waltzed through the first half of their season as they have not been challenged besides a 10 point win over Texas Tech. Dropping to third in the rankings is only going to add fuel to their fire. Oklahoma has revenge on the mind after last year’s debacle. Their defense is more talented and they have played the tougher competition. Play: Oklahoma +3.5
