Oklahoma the New No. 1 in College Football

Written September 29, 2008 by Jack Jones

There isn’t a team in college football that has looked more impressive than the Sooners in 2008, and now Oklahoma has reached the No. 1 overall ranking in the land. The team is looking unstoppable with a strong running game, a star receiver, a tight end that is a red zone machine, and a quarterback that can get them all the ball.

Quarterback Sam Bradford has been nearly flawless in leading the 4-0 Sooners to their first No. 1 ranking in almost five years, and he’s on his way to being a Heisman Trophy finalist. Bradford’s 411 passing yards and four touchdowns paved the way for yet another blowout, as the Sooners easily took care of TCU, which came into the game boasting the best defense in NCAA football. It went about like the college football lines makers said it would, as a double digit win for the Sooners.

The Sooners are wasting no time in getting on top of opponents, with a 75-3 edge in the first quarter of their four games so far, and the team has yet to trail in a single game. The defense is also stepping up their play with nine takeaways in the last two games alone.

Oklahoma’s offense isn’t dependant soley on Bradford though, as tailbacks Chris Brown and DeMarco Murry had five rushing touchdowns in week one, then in week 2 Ryan Broyles set the school’s rookie receiving record with 141 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games. Jermaine Gresham joined in on the fun with two touchdown catches to tie the school’s record for a tight end.

When TCU took away all four of those players, they still couldn’t stop the Sooner offense. Manual Johnson had five receptions for 206 yards and three touchdowns, marking the best day in the history of the school for a receiver. That’s just how talented this offense is, you can take away a few options but there isn’t anyone who can stop the whole machine.

The defense has done more than it’s part too, with Auston English leading the Big 12 last year in sacks, and Gerald McCoy stuffing up the middle at tackle. Now the team has plenty of speed in the back seven to allow them to stay in a 4-3 without having to go to a nickel package.

This year’s team is also focused, after watching last year’s No. 3 ranked squad head into Colorado for a Big 10 opener only to get upset 24-21. They won’t be taking anybody too lightly this year.

It appears that the lines makers feel like the Sooners will stay determined this week, as they opened up as 27-point favorites over Baylor at BetUS.
