Oklahoma Washington Odds

The third-ranked Oklahoma Sooners are looking to keep up their solid play to start the season when they head to Washington to visit the Huskies on Saturday night. The Sooner season really couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for head coach Bob Stoops, but Tyrone Willingham’s Huskies couldn’t have gotten off to a much worse start than they have. Jack Jones takes a look at both teams before giving you the predictions based off of the odds, which shows the spread of this game at Oklahoma -21.5 and a total of 60.5.
Oklahoma has opened up the season with a blowout of Chattanooga, 57-2, and an impressive 52-26 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats a week ago. Those two games leave Oklahoma fifth in college football in terms of total scoring, and the Sooners have yet to fall behind an oponent this season.
Fans are feeling optimistic about a national championship, and the team really hasn’t given them much of a reason not to. It seems like the team is playing hard each week, trying to improve even after blowing out their opponents, which should help them when the competition steps it up a notch in Big 12 South play.
The offense has been click for the Sooners as they racked up 592 yards of total offense against Cincinnati. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Ryan Broyles had to wait one week to get his collegiate debut started, caught a touchdown pass while setting the Sooner freshman record with 141 receiving yards. He had to sit out the game against Chattanooga due to suspension.
Even though the offense has been explosive, Stoops isn’t completely satisfied with his defense after they gave up 326 yards to Cincinnati, including two touchdowns in the second quarter of the game. In the opener the unit looked really tough in holding Chattanooga scoreless and to just 36 total yards.
Washington on the other hand has not had such a fortunate start to the year and is trying to come back from a heart-wrenching loss to BYU last Saturday. The Huskies will try to avoid losing their third straight game to a ranked opponent to start the 2008 season. The first game of the year was a 44-10 blowout against no. 21 Oregon. Last week Washington was hanging in tough against no. 15 BYU until a controversial penalty in the last few seconds of the game.
It was quarterback Jake Locker who guided the team downfield, then ran the last three into the end zone for what would have been the game-tying touchdown with two seconds left, but after throwing the ball in the air to celebrate with his teammates, Locker was called for a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the 35-yard extra point was then blocked for a one-point Washington loss. It was a call that has been disputed all week, with few thinking it was the right one.
The loss was just another one for the Huskies under Willingham, who was supposed to get things turned around but instead if 11-27, 2-11 over his last 13, and 0-7 against top 25 teams. Even with the tough loss Willingham like the hustle and fight he saw out of his players Saturday, and he’s going to need more of it this weekend against the Sooners.
Predictions: Oklahoma 42, Washington 21
