Ole Miss vs Mississippi State Odds

Written November 27, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The Egg Bowl is set once again when the 25th ranked Ole Miss Rebels take on their in-state rival Mississippi State Bulldogs. Ole Miss has won 5 of the last 7 meetings between these two that includes a 45-0 romp at home last year against the Bulldogs. Dan Mullen’s first year as head coach for MSU had to be looked at with optimism as they have four wins and have been competitive in most of their losses. Ole Miss will probably be looking at another trip to the Cotton Bowl with their 9th win on Saturday. The Rebels are an 8 point favorite.

Considered to be one of the biggest disappointments in college football when they sat at 5-3 at the end of October, Houston Nutt and the Ole Miss Rebels have won three straight coming into this weekend’s game. QB Jevan Snead has taken a step back from a strong sophomore campaign. He has been asked to do much less in recent weeks, but has still amassed 2189 yards passing and 17 touchdowns. The main reason for less passing is that Snead has shown he is capable of turning the ball over with an alarming 14 interceptions. RB Dexter McCluster has been a human highlight reel the past four games, rushing for over 700 yards and five touchdowns against some pretty stiff competition. Ole Miss has finally realized that they need him to touch the ball as much as possible if they want to win ball games as they use him in their passing game also. WR Shay Hodge is having a nice senior season and has provided leadership to this team. He has caught 57 balls for 927 yards and seven touchdowns making him a prime contender for all-conference honors. The Rebel defense has been a strength all season long, allowing under 17 ppg in one of the toughest conferences in the country.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs have been the doormat of the SEC West for quite sometime and occupy that position once again this year. RB Anthony Dixon has been a workhorse for the team, carrying the ball 228 times for 1258 yards and 11 touchdowns. Dixon was an all-conference performer a year ago and has put up the numbers to make it back-to-back selections for one of the finest players in the SEC. QB Tyson Lee has struggled mightily in his senior season. He is undersized for his position and has trouble seeing over the players in the trenches. Lee has thrown for over 1200 yards and four scores, but has 13 interceptions with one game to go in his career. The lack of a passing game makes what Dixon has done running the ball even more remarkable. Dan Mullen inherited many of these players, but the 2010 recruiting class looks superb and it could be soon that Mississippi State is contending for the SEC West crown.

Ole Miss has dominated the Bulldogs in recent meetings. They have the superior talent and are playing to strengthen their bowl bid. Both defenses are above average, but the Runnin’ Rebs offense is capable of putting points on the board with every drive. Dexter McCluster will be too much to contain for four quarters. Play: Ole Miss -8
