Oregon has one of the nation’s top offenses after two blowout victories in Autzen Stadium. The Ducks are hoping they can continue to rack up the yards and touchdowns while traveling on the road. Last year it was the same story as Oregon had the fifth-best offense in the country through the first two months before quarterback Dennis Dixon was lost to a knee injury.
Even with Dixon having graduated and running back Jonathan Stewart moving on to the Carolina Panthers in the NFL, the Ducks offense has gotten back on track to where they were to begin last season. The Ducks are averaging 592 ypg and 55 ppg after their first two wins.
Nate Costa was supposed to be the signal caller to start the season, but he went down with a season-ending knee injury. That left Justin Roper, who as a redshirt freshman helped Oregon beat South Florida in the Sun Bowl by throwing four touchdown passes. He shined in the 66-24 victory over Utah State, throwing for a touchdown and running for another while guiding the Ducks to 688 total yards of offense.
LeGarrette Blount led the rushing attack with 132 yards, as Oregon had seven rushing touchdowns. The bad news for the team and the ground game was that senior running back Jeremiah Johnson dislocated his right shoulder after one carry. Head coach Mike Bellotti says, that he held Johnson out of the rest of the game as a precautionary matter, and he should be back in the fold against Purdue. The Ducks will be trying to beat a Big Ten team on the road for the second straight season after beating Michigan 38-7. That shouldn’t be much of a problem as Joe Tiller has lost 14 straight games to ranked opponents while guiding the Boilermakers. Last year Purdue opened up their season with a 42-10 spanking of Northern Colorado and senior quarterback Curtis Painter got off to a good start with two touchdowns. His top targets were seniors Desmond Tardy and Greg Orton, who combined for 201 receiving yards.
The team is picking up right where they left off a year ago when they were the top offense and passing team in the Big Ten. With Painter’s 29 touchdowns returning, they should be able to post strong passing numbers again in 2008. Betting Purdue at +8 at JustBet Sportsbook will get you a 20% signup bonus.
