Oregon at Stanford College Football Odds

The Oregon Ducks took care of the USC Trojans in a big way last weekend and now they are looking to prove they are the class of the Pac 10 Conference this year. The Ducks season has gone full circle, starting so badly, but they have clearly turned things around in a big way and they have a whole lot to play for now. The Stanford Cardinal have improved a great deal from the last couple of years, but they need a signature win to prove they have arrived in a big way. As low as the season started for Oregon many, including myself, thought they were very overrated. They have come back and proven everyone wrong and shown they are a very good football team. The offense is averaging 35.6 points per game behind the leadership of quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. Masoli is throwing the football effectively and keeping teams honest with the pass, but he is a huge weapon when he runs, as witnessed by his 6 yards per rush average even including sacks and lost yardage. LaMichael James has been a great addition at tailback for the Ducks. James has 922 yards on the season and is averaging 7 yards per carry. Kenjon Barner is an exciting returner who averages 35 yards per kick return. The biggest surprise for Oregon may be the defense, which is terrific. Oregon is allowing just 17 points per game on the season and the defense has proven adept at forcing turnovers.
The Stanford Cardinal are 5-3 on the year and they are pushing toward their goal of making a bowl game this year. Most NCAA football picks have underrated this team this season, but many experts and handicappers have begun to catch on. Andrew Luck is the highly touted freshman quarterback who is filling his role very well, but there is no doubt that running back Toby Gerhart is the workhorse and the leader of the offense. Gerhart has 980 yards and 13 touchdowns in just 8 games this season. Stanford likes to use the run to wear defenses down as the game goes along and Gerhart’s style of running is very conducive to this. The Stanford offense averages 32 points a game and is very balanced when they are at their best. The defense is greatly improved from a year ago. Stanford allows 22 points per game and tends to do well stopping the run. Their run defense will get the ultimate test this weekend as the Oregon Ducks come to town.
The NCAA football lines for this weekend show Oregon as a 7 point favorite on the road in this Pac 10 showdown. Stanford is 10-1 against the spread in their last 11 home games, but Oregon is 6-0 against the spread in their last 6 overall. Something has to give in this game. Football picks around the web seem to be skewing pretty heavily toward Oregon and after last weekend I can’t find any reason to bet against the Ducks. The posted total set for this game is 58.5 points.
The Stanford defense has been good, but they haven’t faced a team like the Oregon Ducks. Oregon is rolling right now and I expect their run game to overpower the Cardinal in this one. Gerhart will get his yards, but Masoli and the Ducks will have more success in the end. The Ducks should cover in this one.
