Oregon State at Oregon Odds
Written by Jack Jones
The Oregon State Beavers travel to face the Oregon Ducks Saturday in an annual rivalry known as the Civil War. The Ducks would clinch a spot in the Pac-12 title game with a win, while the Beavers are simply playing for pride after being eliminated from bowl contention. Oregon has won the last three meetings in this series, including a 37-20 road victory as a 16-point favorite last year. Darron Thomas threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns, while LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner combined for 267 rushing yards and three scores to lead the way for the Ducks.
Odds makers anticipate another blowout, installing a line of Oregon -28 over Oregon State and a total set of 63.5 points.
Oregon
After losing their opener to LSU, the Ducks managed to win their next nine games to get right back into the BCS championship discussion. Then, Oklahoma State lost to Iowa State last Friday, really putting them in a great position. Oregon (9-2, 7-1 Pac-12) would squander their opportunity with a painful 38-35 loss to the USC Trojans last Saturday. They fell five spots in the AP Top 25 with the loss, dropping from fourth to ninth.
Oregon nearly pulled off an improbable comeback against the Trojans. Trailing 38-14 in the third quarter, they reeled off 21 unanswered points and got within a field goal with 7:05 remaining. They forced a USC fumble, and drove all the way down to the Trojan 25-yard line to set up a tying field goal attempt. Alejandro Maldonado missed a 37-yarder wide left, putting an end to their comeback bid.
The Ducks come in ranked 8th in the country in total offense (496.1 yards/game) and 68th in total defense (391.0 yards/game). James is having a Heisman Trophy-worthy season despite missing a few games due to injury. He has rushed for 1,285 yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging 7.4/carry. Barner has chipped in 766 yards and 10 scores. Thomas is completing 61.3 percent of his passes for 1,969 yards and 23 touchdowns to five interceptions. De’Anthony Thomas and Lavasier Tunei each have eight receiving touchdowns on the year.
Oregon State
It has been a lost season for the Beavers, but they would certainly like to salvage it with a win over their biggest rivals Saturday. Oregon State (3-8, 3-5 Pac-12) has suffered losing streaks of four and three games this season. They put an end to that 3-game skid with a 38-21 home victory over Washington on Senior Day last Saturday.
Quarterback Sean Mannion had a monster game against the Huskies, throwing for 339 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. The Beavers outgained Washington 484-315 for the game while focing three turnovers. Jovan Stevenson would not be denied around the goal line, rushing 10 times for 41 yards and three touchdowns.
The Beavers come in ranked 68th in the FBS in total offense (379.0 yards/game) and 65th in total defense (387.7 yards/game). Their 79th-ranked run defense (181.5 yards/game) will certainly be tested this weekend. Mannion is completing 64.8 percent of his passes for 3,033 yards and 13 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. He has played well despite working with a rushing offense (93.4 yards/game) that ranks 112th in the country.
