Things couldn’t have much gone better for Penn State last week when they beat up on Coastal Carolina 66-10 in their opener. Those 66 points marked the most for Nittany Lions team to start a season since 1926 and gave head coach Joe Paterno 373 career wins, enough to tie him with Bobby Bowden at the top of the all-time win list.

Oregon State on the other hand opened up with a tough loss to Pac-10 rival Stanford, 36-28. The loss snapped an eight game winning streak against the Cardinal, and now the team has to travel across the country to try and bounce back against a tough opponent. However, the Beavers have won three of their last four road games against top 25 teams.

The offense gained plenty of yards when they racked up 490 yards against Stanford, but three Beaver turnovers, including one on the goalline in the final seconds cost them any chance of coming out on top. Lyle Moevao though looked impressive when he connected on 34 of his 54 throws for 404 yards and three touchdowns, but needs to shake off the two costly picks he threw in the game. Sammie Stroughter benefited from Moevao’s accuracy with 12 grabs for 157 yards and two scores. Shane Moreales was the other stud at wide receiver with 13 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown.

The Oregon State defense limited Stanford to only 301 total yards, but the rush defense needs to shore up some holes. They allowed the Cardinal to gain 210 rushing yards exposing the four new starters along the Beaver front line. The other bad thing about their week 1 performance was the lack of turnovers forced. Last week was beautiful for Penn State fans who like offense. The team put up 334 rushing yards while passing for 260 more and the 594 total yards was the most for the team in 13 years. The rushing attack was led by freshman Stephfon Green, who had 89 yards and two touchdowns on 10 attempts. The usual starter, Evan Royster, ended up with three touchdowns and 64 yards on only eight carries, but was rested for most of the game with it so out of reach. Both quarterbacks who have been contending for the starting job saw time, with starter Daryll Clark throwing for 146 yards and a touchdown on 11-for-14 passing and Pat Devlin adding 83 yards while going 5-for-8.

Jordan Norwood led the receivers with 74 yards and a touchdown on four receptions, but this Nittany Lion team is so loaded with talent that the damage was spread around pretty evenly.

Defensively Penn State limited the opposition to just 250 total yards, with only 52 coming against them on the ground. The Lions also sacked the quarterback four times and got an interception from Bani Gbadyu. You can bet on the Penn State -16 spread at BetUS and get a 50% signup bonus on your first deposit.
