Football Spreads: Oregon at Washington

Written October 22, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

It might be flying under the radar in some areas this week, but the matchup this Saturday between Oregon and Washington in the northwest should be a fine college football game. The Ducks got off to a terrible start to the season in Boise, but they have been playing exceptional football of late. Washington has 4 losses on the season, but 3 of them have come by 8 points or less. The Huskies are tough to beat in Seattle, but Jeremiah Masoli and the Ducks need this win in a big way.  If you are ready to get serious about betting college football, you should take a long, hard look at this $500 match bonus over at BetUS.

If you were like me and you watched the opening night game between Oregon and Boise State you probably wondered how on earth Oregon was ranked so highly. Now they are starting to show why writers and coaches thought so highly of them. The rushing attack of the Ducks is the best that Washington will have seen thus far. Jeremiah Masoli is a great runner at quarterback and he makes this offense tick. Masoli isn’t a great passer, but he is good enough to keep the defense honest, and he tends to make good decisions with the football. LaMichael James has been a great surprise at running back for Oregon, averaging 6.3 yards per carry on the season. The Oregon defense has been tremendous all year long, keeping them in games even when the offense plays subpar football. The defense is only giving up 281 yards per game and 16.3 points per game.

Washington has had a roller coaster ride of a season, with the huge win over USC being the top and the horrible last second loss at Arizona State last weekend being the bottom. The team is leaps and bounds better than last year, but they are wanting more from their season. The unquestionable leader of the team is Jake Locker. Locker is a dual threat quarterback who has shown he can really throw the football well. Locker has thrown for 1,697 yards on the season and has thrown for 11 touchdowns and rushed for 4 more. Chris Polk has done a pretty good job at running back and the receiving corps is very deep for the Huskies. The Huskies defense definitely has some more improving to do. The defense is allowing 485 yards per game in their last 3 games and 367 yards per game through the air.

The Huskies are 10 point underdogs at home in this big Pac 10 showdown set for Saturday afternoon according to our latest college football odds. The total has been set at 52 points. Oregon is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 matchups against the Huskies and they are 4-0 against the spread in their last 4 games. The Huskies are 4-3 against the spread this season, 3-1 at home.

The Oregon Ducks will definitely be running the football consistently in this one. Until Washington proves it can stop it Oregon will run the ball almost every play. Jake Locker and the Washington offense should be able to move the ball some, but they’ll need to score touchdowns and not field goals against a team as dynamic as Oregon. I think the Ducks win this one, but it might be tough to cover a double digit spread in Seattle.
