Baltimore Orioles at Seattle Mariners: MLB Picks
Written July 6, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
Baltimore is 36-46 on the season but is way more talented then their record shows. They have a very potent offense that can score runs in bunches. Lead off man Brian Roberts has eight homers, 40 RBIs and is hitting .278 from the plate. Nick Markakis has eight home runs, is tied for team lead with 55 RBIs and is hitting a solid .293. Aubrey Huff is also a key hitter as he has 11 homers and 55 RBIs. However, the O’s best player this season and an all-star game select has been Adam Jones who has collected 12 homers, 46 RBIs and is hitting .308 from the plate. You add power hitting Luke Scott and young rookies Nolan Reimold and Matt Wieters to the conversation and you have some lineup. The pitching has been as bad as any overall, but perhaps their most effective pitcher has been Bradley Bergesen. The 24 year old rookie is 5-2 with a 3.53 ERA. He has gone six innings or more in 10 of his last 12 starts and in the two he didn’t go six, he went 5.2. He is much better at night then during day games. 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA is his stat line at night as opposed to his 1-0 record and 4.13 ERA in his five day starts. In his five June starts he went 3-0 with a 2.23 ERA. Expect him to shine tonight as Seattle is one of the more overrated teams in the game. The x-factor tonight will be Nolan Reimold who has began to swing a very hot bat. Today’s baseball betting lines show the Orioles -101 against the Mariners with the total set for 8 runs.
The Seattle Mariners are 42-39 on the season and are getting way more respect then they deserve. The M’s are once again led by all-star Ichiro Suzuki who has six homers, 20 RBIs and is hitting a staggering .362 from the dish. Russell Branyan has 20 home runs, 45 RBIs and is surprisingly hitting .293. After that, they are all hit or miss. Jose Lopez has 11 homers, 48 RBIs but is hitting .258 from the plate. Franklin Gutierrez and Ronny Cedeno have played much better then expected while Adrian Beltre and Wladimir Balentien have both been bitter disappointments. On the mound tonight for Seattle is Jarrod Washburn who is 4-6 with a 3.36 ERA, His poor record does not indicate his performance. Washburn has been above average but hos gotten little run support. His home/away numbers have been very similar while his day/night records are a vast difference. During the day, Jarrod is 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA while at night he is 2-4 with a 3.66 ERA. Expect a let down start from him tonight. While Seattle is 21-15 at home as opposed to Baltimore’s awful 12-26 road record. I see Baltimore getting an edge tonight.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Orioles are 14-38 in their last 52 road games. The Mariners are 7-1 in their last eight home games. The M’s are also 13-3 in their last 16 games as a favorite. Personally, I couldn’t give a darn about those trends. Baltimore has a much better offense and in my opinion is fielding the pitcher who is throwing better. Medium play on Baltimore tonight.
Jordan’s Pick: Baltimore Orioles -101
