New Orleans Saints at Miami Dolphins NFL Spreads
Written October 25, 2009 by Black Widow
The unbeaten 5-0 New Orleans Saints hit the road this Sunday to face the 2-3 Miami Dolphins. In the most anticipated game of the week last Sunday, the Saints throttled the Giants 48-27 at home to prove they are the real deal this season. Miami was getting extra time to prepare for this explosive New Orleans offense with a bye week after they beat the Jets 31-27 in a thriller two Monday’s ago. The books clearly feel the Saints will remain unbeaten as the NFL spreads have unveiled New Orleans -6.5 over Miami with a Total Set of 48 points.
The Saints are no longer having to win games in spite of their defense, because this New Orleans stop unit is one of the best in the business in 2009. But the offense is doing their part once again, as Drew Brees leads the top-ranked offense in the league into Miami Sunday. New Orleans will attempt to start 6-0 for the first time since 1991. Miami and New Orleans were battling to sign Drew Brees three years ago, but the Saints won that battle by offering him the most money. Brees was said to actually prefer going to Miami over New Orleans at the time, but they didn’t want him badly enough. So he’ll be trying to make the Dolphins pay for passing up on him, that’s a guarantee. Perhaps the biggest acquisition for the Saints in the off-season was signing Darren Sharper, who leads the NFL with 5 interceptions. The Saints rank 9th in the NFL in total defense, allowing 301.2 yards/game this season. The Giants had the top-ranked defense coming into last week’s meeting with New Orleans, but Brees lit ‘em up for 369 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. They put up 34 points in the first half alone, and the rest was history. Also helping out Brees is a consistent rushing attack as the Saints average 159.6 yards/game on the ground.

Unlike the Saints, the Dolphins are a power-running team behind the two-headed attack of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. They play smash-mouth football, simply trying to wear down their opponents so they can win it in the fourth quarter. The Dolphins started 0-3, but they have won back-to-back games behind and average of 200.5 rushing yards/contest. For the season, Miami puts up 177.0 rushing yards/game which is tops in the league. Surprisingly, it was their passing game behind QB Chad Henne that won the game for them last time out in a 31-27 victory over the Jets on Monday Night Football. Henne threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the fourth quarter. The wildcat formation is working wonders for this team, as the Dolphins average 7.1 yards/play when either Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown takes the snap. This game could come down to which team can stop the run better, considering both teams run the ball as well as any other team in the league, and both stop the run very effectively. The Dolphins yield 76.4 yards/game on the ground while the Saints aren’t far behind at 83.4.
