2010 Oscars Predictions & Odds to Win
Written by Amy Drake
The Oscars are right around the corner and we will finally find out who was the best of the best on March 7th. With so many talented actors in the mix and so many blockbusters coming out every week it’s anyone’s guess who the tiny gold statue will go to!
Best Picture:
Usually the most anticipated category of the night, this one will be a good one to see. Oscars.com outlines ten great movies that range from the highly unique Avatar directed by James Cameron and Jon Landau to the adorable animated Up from Jonas Rivera.
Brad Pitt was quite a character in Inglorious Bastards and his infamous lines make this movie authentic and memorable. A movie about a group called “The Bastards” who are out to send a message by killing Nazis this one has one turn after another. Lots of subtitles add a little bit of distraction but also make the move a bit more real. Odds on this movie grabbing the gold are +1400.
The Hurt Locker is also a big contender in this category and Canadian E! online ca.eonline.com reports that this move just might be cursed. One of the directors is apparently banned from the awards because of a rule violation and the movie is also facing a law suit from a former war vet. Who knows if this will come out on top despite the bad karma! Odds are -150 for the Hurt Locker to win.
Up in the Air is George Clooney at his best with one of favorite Twilight stars, Anna Kendrick. They travel the world downsizing and make what is really going on in our country even more real. Yet, there are some great funny parts and even a little love mixed into this one. Odds are +3000 that this movie takes it!
Other Odds for Best Picture are:
Avatar: +110
Up: +8000
Best Actor in a Leading Role:
This one is always fun to watch and will likely bring some great…and some lame speeches. Of course, this category always overlaps with the Best Picture category just a bit and always has some great actors listed.
Mr. Cool George Clooney is up for this award for giving workers the heave-ho in Up in The Air. He definitely gets the award for best aged, but will he pull a gold? Another prospect for this award is Jeff Bridges for his soulful performance in Crazy Heart where he sings, plays guitar and even snags a lady friend played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jeremy Renner is another leading man hoping to snag this Oscar for his role in The Hurt Locker. A bold and emotional role that likely took a lot of soul searching; he’s surely hoping he made the cut!
Odds for Best Actor:
George Clooney: +600
Jeff Bridges: -800
Jeremy Renner: +2000
Now for the best ladies this year. Best Actress in a leading role is one of those categories that can be anyone’s guess until the name is called. However, this year one name comes to mind in a big way. Sandra Bullock has been all over daytime television for her role in the Blind Side and for good reason. She brings a great performance as Leigh Anne Touhy, the mother and backbone of the family who took in and raised football player Michael Oher. Her great southern twang and hilarious punch lines add to the performance. Gabby Sidibe is the adorable actress in the touching movie Precious and came out of nowhere with no acting training at all. Yet, she steals the spotlight and provides a touching, believable part. Maryl Streep is also a woman in the running for her part in Julie and Julia, as the hilarious and slightly clueless cook, Julia Child. The movie outline Julie Child’s life as a lover, new cook and cookbook author and Streep not only captured the essence of the real cook, but even got her laugh down. Few cooking lovers missed this one and are hoping for Streep to pull away with the award!
Odds for Best Actress:
Maryl Streep: +160
Sandra Bullock: -180
Gabby Sidibe: +1400
Best Original Screenplay:
This one is a toughie but a goodie. It’s always good to finally see a movie that doesn’t seem like something that you just paid to see 6 months ago. With a lot of great ones on the docket, it may seem like all about luck, but there are a few that stick out on top to us. With Up being an animated film that both children and adults piled into the theatres to see, it seems that this one might have a chance, even though it’s not even real people walking around on the screen. Inglorious Basterds is such a fantastic view of Nazi Occupied France in the 1940’s and has Quentin Tarantino’s name all over it. This one will surely be one that was well deserved no matter who wins.
Odds for Original Screenplay:
Inglorious Basterds: -200
The Hurt Locker: +160
Up: +1200
