Owners of 2008 Kentucky Derby Horses

The Kentucky Derby is a race that allows owners to bring in their horse in hopes that they have raised the best horse of the year, and they can bring home the first of three big races of the season. This year the Kentucky Derby is set to get underway on May 3rd, as it continues its tradition of racing on the first Saturday of May. This time around we are going to take a look at some of the owners that have horses racing in the derby. While many owners will spend top dollar to get the best trainer and jockey possible, others have a much tighter budget to deal with. While it might be an advantage to have the better trainer and jockey, winning the race can be done. Just look back to the 2003 running of the Kentucky Derby, when a small group of owners produced the first winning horse out of the state of New York (Funny Cide). So lets take a look at some of the owners in the 2008 Kentucky Derby.

Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC

Winchell Thoroughbreds isn’t a real proven horse racing ownership when it comes to the Kentucky Derby, as they have only raced in the derby twice, with their best finish coming at 9th in 2004. They also raced in last year’s race and finished 12th with Zanjero. This year all that could change as they have what many believe is one of the best horses in the race in Pyro. Pyro may not take home the victory, but these guys should get their first show at the derby.

IEAH Stables

These guys have two big name horses this year in Big Brown and Court Vision scheduled to race in the Kentucky Derby. While Big Brown is part owned with Paul Pompa Jr., and Court Vision is part owned by WinStar Farm LLC. While Big Brown is the favorite coming into the race, many people have been picking Court Vision as a horse that will do some damage in this year’s race. So either way it looks good for IEAH Stables.

WinStar Farm LLC

We have already mentioned these guys with their part ownership in Court Vision, but they solely own the horse with the second best odds at the Kentucky Derby, in Colonel John. This horse is a real threat and the team hopes that it can get a victory at the derby after getting a 2nd place finish in 2006 with Bluegrass Cat.

Stonerside Stable

Here we not only get a horse owner, but a NFL owner as well. Bob McNair spends much of his time dealing with things on the football field, but does spend some money in the horse racing business. This year he will be representing Cowboy Cal, and will be hoping to improve off his best derby finish in 2001, when Congaree ran third.

Cubanacan Stables

This is an ownership in which Cubans Carlos Juelle and Jose Prieto buy one horse a year and try and get that horse to be a challenge in the Kentucky Derby and other horse races. Two years ago they got a pretty good deal when they bought Gayego for just $32,000. This could end up being a big time reward for these guys, as Gayego has been talked about making a surprise finish in this year’s race.

So you can see that there are all kinds of owners that bring horses to race at the Kentucky Derby. While many of us will be placing bets on the race, a good tip is to always do a little background check on just who owns the horse, as it usually plays a big roll in the outcome. As always feel free to leave any comments in the comment box.
