2009 NFL Predictions: Green Bay Packers
Written August 23, 2009 by Nick Scarpa
The Green Bay Packers like the way their football team is looking despite coming off a disappointing 6-10 2008 season. The Packers are Aaron Rodgers team now and he proved last year that he is one of the better quarterbacks in the league. Rodgers had some struggles late in games but showed toughness, leadership and excellent deep passing ability. The defense was what needed a tune-up and head coach Mike McCarthy opted to install a 3-4 scheme. The transition to the 3-4 could take some time adjust to but the team has solid personnel in place to make it work. Green Bay should be one of the most improved teams in the NFL and are likely to make the playoffs as a wildcard team out of the NFC North.

The Green Bay Packers offense made lots of big plays through the air with Aaron Rodgers and was ranked 5th in the NFL in scoring. Aaron Rodgers could be headed for a breakout season in 2009 with another year out from under Brett Favre‘s shadow. Rodgers is accurate and can throw on the move like Favre but he needs to get rid of the ball quicker. At wideout the Packers have a dangerous big-play weapon in WR Greg Jennings. Across from Jennings is reliable possession receiver Donald Driver who had his 6th 1,000 yard season last year. The running game features RB Ryan Grant who had a disappointing season last year. Backing up Grant however are solid players in Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wynn and FB Korey Hall. The O-line has some sore spots but should improve with more experience.
The Packers drafted for the 3-4 defensive transition by drafting an impact nose tackle in B.J Raji. Raji is a plug in the middle that should help Green Bay improve on last years‘ 26th ranked run defense. Cullen Jenkins will make his return to a defensive line that was below-average last season with him on the sideline. Jenkins has a lightning quick first step and gets great penetration. ILB Aaron Kampman could have a big-time year as a pass-rusher with Green Bay‘s transition to the 3-4. Kampman was premier pass-rushing ability and could rack up around 15.0 sacks. The secondary is very-good with one of the best safety tandems in the NFL in Nick Collins and Atari Bigby. This unit should improve on last year’s 22nd ranked defense. Special teams have some issues with the kicking game but returner Will Blackmon is a good player.
