Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton Fight Predictions

Written April 29, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

pacquiao-hatton-fight-predictions-042909Wow, what a fight this should be. You are taking two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and putting them in same ring. These two men share very similar characteristics, while they also possess many differences in style and technique. Perhaps the thing they share most in common is their heart. These are two men who have pride for themselves, their country and their greatness. In this article I will break down each fighter from top to bottom and explain why I made the pick I did.

Manny Pacquiao: The best pound for pound fighter in the world currently. An absolute bulldog in the ring that is fast and strong. Standing only 5′6 inches tall, Pacquiao has used his speed and skill to stifle fighters over his championship career. He uses a southpaw style which is unique for a fighter like himself who is so quick. This is the main reason he rarely gets beaten. He’s trained my the legendary Freddie Roach who has been around the ring for a long time. Roach has an excellent reputation as an all-around trainer. He covers all assets from conditioning, strength, diet regiment and his most on point skill is keeping the media frenzy away from his fighters. If there was ever a fight where you can’t allow a let down, it is this one. Now, for everybody that feels this fight is a lock for Manny, I would ease up just a bit and realize these points. With the exception of his 8th round KO of recently retired Oscar De La Hoya who looked non existent, he has not been all that dominant. His previous three fights before Oscar were:

vs David Diaz (weak fighter) Result- 9th round KO

vs Juan Manuel Marquez Result- Split Decision win (Highway robbery, Marquez was the better fighter that night)

vs Marco Antonio Barrera (Aging star) Result- Unanimous Decision (looked very spotty late in the fight)

If he fights this Saturday night like he did in any of those fights, he will get pummeled by Hatton. Another interesting thing to watch for is how Pacquiao will react to the weight he put on for this bout. Beware bettors, Manny is a nice sized favorite and I just don’t see being accurate. Side note, Sylvester Stallone is currently working on a movie with Pacquiao. The last fighter to be in movie preparation during the time of a fight was Antonio Tarver and oh boy, we know how that story went.

Ricky Hatton: “The Hitman” is what this British boxing machine goes by in his home town Stockport/Greater Manchester, England. With a career record of 45-1 (lone loss coming against Floyd Mayweather Jr by way of TKO), Hatton looks to get back on track this weekend at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He has a orthodox style with extreme punching power. He is tough as nails with very good foot movement especially on the outer ropes of the ring. Hatton is trained by what many people feel is the best trainer in the game right now, Floyd Mayweather Sr. Yes that’s right, the father of the man who knocked Hatton out back in December of 2007 is the trainer for the British sensation in what is unquestionably the biggest fight of his career. A major factor will be for Ricky to keep Pacquiao stationary. If he allows Manny to use his speed and connect of three punch combinations and then bail out, Hatton will most likely not be able to have a big enough effect on the fight. Many people look at this fight as two brawlers who will just for go strategy and be warriors. I simply do not see that from a Floyd Sr. fighter. Hatton absolutely must keep Pacquiao moving backwards. If he does he will have enough time to hit him with power punches and that should get him rattled enough to throw wildly. In his recent fights he demolished the “Magic Man” Paulie Mailgnaggi by TKO (corner retirement) and before that he won a unanimous decision over one of the most underrated boxers in the Light Welterweight division in Juan Lazcano. Look below folks but beware, the pick is a doozy.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: Manny Pacquiao is a legendary boxer period. He will go down as one of the better skilled boxers of all time with belts and key victories to back it up. However, I feel he is quite distracted with to many things brewing to focus on his most talented opponent yet. The fact he is working on a movie currently is not being pin pointed here enough. That is a major distraction that is not needed. His last three fights he has struggled with one being a victory he should not have received. This will be a fight where he for once is NOT the stronger fighter and his warrior mentality could prove to be his biggest demon. Ricky Hatton is stronger and from what I have seen, read and heard from numerous sources the much more focused and hungry fighter. Freddie Roach is a fabulous trainer, one of the best. But he is opposed by the best in the sport. Floyd Sr’s instruction in terms of defense and attack mode has sunk in with Ricky, this is his time. Look for the British wonder to make a statement worldwide Saturday night. Two of Pacquiao’s three losses came by way of KO.

Current Odds (Sportsbook.com): Manny Pacquiao -270, Ricky Hatton +210

Jordan’s Pick: Ricky Hatton +210 (10th round KO over Manny Pacquiao)
