Carolina Panthers vs. Kansas City Chiefs Football Predictions
Written October 3, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the Kansas City Chiefs (1-3) go for their second straight win after losing 12 straight regular season games, as they head to Carolina to take on the 3-1 Panthers who are coming off a 24-9 beating of the Falcons last week. While the Panthers beat up on the same young squad that throttled the Chiefs earlier this season, last week the Chiefs showed some life that maybe these young eyes are going to be just fine, as they hosted the undefeated Denver Broncos and handed it to them 33-19. The oddsmakers aren’t buying the Chiefs success just yet, as they have the Chiefs 9.5 underdogs against the Panthers this weekend at BetUS.com
After really struggling to start the season and scoring just 32 points in their first 3 games, the Chiefs came out firing last week scoring 33, and a large part of that goes to running back Larry Johnson who had his best game in long time rushing for 198 yards and 2 scores. Damon Huard looked sharp at quarterback completing 21 of 28 passes for 160 yards and a score. The Chiefs are still looking for someone other than Tony Gonzalez and Dwayne Bowe to step it up in the passing game, as they have got little to nothing out of the rest of the bunch. Now the Chiefs likely aren’t a team that will put 30 points up week in and week out, as last week they played a Broncos defense that hasn’t been able to stop anyone. The Panthers are much better against the run, and the key to this one for the Chiefs will be finding some way to keep Johnson going, and keeping the offense on the field. One problem with this is rookie first round pick left tackle Branden Albert has dislocated right elbow that will not only keep him out of this one, but likely even more games down the road.

Though the offense had a pretty easy task against the Broncos, the defense of the Chiefs had been sluggish to start the season, and the Broncos offense had been one of the best through the first 3 weeks of the season. So this unit deserves a lot of credit for the way they played. They did allow Jay Cutler to throw for 361 yards, but they shut down the running game, and were able to force to big interceptions and most importantly keep the Broncos settling for field goals. The big concern for this group this week, is just how different this team seems to play on the road vs. at home. If they can find a way to get that same level of intensity they might be able to keep this one close. Bet Chiefs +9.5 at BetUS.com
The Panthers got their first easy win of the season, as they had to scratch and claw for their first two wins over the Chargers and Bears. The offense is back to its old form with Jake Delhomme under center, as he has came out firing this season for 860 yards, and seems to make the big plays when needed. The addition of Muhsin Muhammad to go along with the proven star Steve Smith seems to be working as the two hooked up for 243 yards and 2 scores last week against he Falcons. The Panthers continue to split time between DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, as they have combined to help the Panthers to the leagues 4th best rushing attack at 143 yards a game. The Chiefs have struggled against the run this season, so don’t be surprises to see both these backs go off this weekend.
The defense maybe hasn’t played to the level of the fans and coaches liking to start the season, but they really put together a solid performance against the Falcons last weekend giving up just 9 points. Like the Chiefs this defense seems to play a little better at home, so we are expecting this unit to make it very tough on the Chiefs this weekend. This will be a good test for the Panthers who get ready for back to back games against division opponents in Tampa bay and New Orleans. Bet Carolina -9.5 at BetUS.com
