This weekend Notre Dame (5-2) continues its difficult schedule, as they get ready to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers (5-2) in what should be a good battle between two solid football teams. Last week the Panthers fell for the first time in Big East play, as they got beat up by Rutgers 34-54 at home, as for the Fighting Irish they bounced back well from their loss to UNC, as they made easy work of Washington on the road 33-7. The oddsmakers are taking the Fighting Irish at home in this one, as Notre Dame comes in 4.5 point favorites over Pittsburgh at Sportsbook.com

Pittsburgh did a pretty good job offensively scoring 34 points, and a good chunk of those points came from running back LeSean McCoy who ran for 146 yards and all 3 of the Panthers touchdowns last week. Quarterback Bill Stull really through the ball well, as he completed 16 of 22 passes for 279 yards, but the Panthers needed more touchdown, and Stull was unable to hook up with any of his receivers for big plays. The Panthers will have to get it going again this weekend, as the Irish have showed they can put some points on the board.

The Panthers defense was no where to be found in their last game, even though they actually gave up fewer yards than the opposing team. Rutgers racked up 442 yards of total offense, with 371 of them coming through the air. Now the defense only gave up 71 yards on the ground, but getting ready for an Irish offense that is pretty pass happy, this unit better fix its secondary fast. Bet Pittsburgh +4.5 at Sportsbook.com

The Irish look like a strong football team again this year, and they get another big challenge this weekend against the Panthers. Last week quarterback Jimmy Clausen wasn’t asked to do much, but did have 207 yards and hooked up with Michael Floyd for 51 yards for the Irish’s first score of the game. The Irish did most of their damage on the ground rushing for 252 yards and 3 touchdowns, with two of those coming from James Aldridge.

The Irish’s defense will likely be the key to this one going Notre Dame’s way, as the offense should score its share of points, and if the defense can keep McCoy in check it will really make things easier. The Panthers aren’t a team the Irish can look over, and if the Irish slip up at all they could wind up getting upset at home by a good Big East football team. Bet Notre Dame -4.5 at Sportsbook.com
