Carolina Panthers vs. Green Bay Packers NFL Betting Odds & Spread
Written November 27, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The Green Bay Packers have their work cut out for them, as they fell to 5-6 last week after getting routed by the Saints at home 51-29, and now are a game behind both the Bears and the Vikings in the NFC North. This week the Packers face another NFC South team, as the 8-3 Carolina Panthers head to Lambeau this Sunday. Last week Carolina caught a good wake up call, as they went into Atlanta and got beat pretty bad by the Falcons 45-28. So for those of you looking to do some NFL betting on this one, the oddsmakers have the Packers 3 point favorites at home over the Panthers at Sportsbook.com
The Panthers had won 4 straight before the loss against the Falcons last week, and now find themselves all bunched up in the NFC South as they sit tied for first with the Buccaneers just a game ahead of the Falcons. Now the Panthers really didn’t play all that bad on the offensive side of things, as they put 28 points on the board, as Jake Delomme had 295 yards passing including a 16 yard strike to Muhsin Muhammad for a touchdown. Now the running game was led by DeAngelo Williams, who ran it 19 times for 101 yards and a score, but got little to nothing out of rookie Jonathan Stewart, who ran it just 5 times for 15 yards. This week they will likely look to get that running game going once again, as the Packers have had their struggles this season.
The Panthers defense had no answer for running back Michael Turner, as Turner lit up the Panthers for 117 yards and 4 touchdowns on 24 carries, and that wasn’t all, as Harry Douglas added another touchdown run for the Falcons. So rookie quarterback Matt Ryan didn’t have any touchdown passes in this one, but he did throw for 259 yards, including 92 to Douglas and 70 to his favorite target on the season, Roddy White. Now the Panthers have to play better on this side of the ball this week, or Ryan Grant and Aaron Rodgers are going to give the Packers plenty to cheer about. Bet Panthers +3 at Sportsbook.com
After routing the Bears a couple weeks ago, the Packers quickly fell back to earth when they took on the Saints last week, as they were unable to keep pace with the Saints scoring attack on Monday Night Football. The Packers did score early, as they put 21 on the board by the end of the first half, but when the 2nd half rolled around this unit just couldn’t get it going. Rodgers had his struggles in this one, as he threw 3 interceptions to just two touchdowns, and Ryan Grant struggled to get it going on the ground, as he wound up with just 67 yards on 18 carries. We expect the Packers to turn all that around this week in front of the home crowd, as they really need this win if they want to make a run at the playoffs this season.
Now there isn’t much good to say about the Packers defense last week, as Drew Brees threw it at will for 323 yards and 4 scores on 20 of 26 passing, including 2 touchdown strikes to Lance Moore, who had 115 yards on the day. What really hurt the Packers is they not only gave up one touchdown pass for 70 yards, they wound up giving up two in this one, and that just isn’t winning football. The Packers run defense had its struggles as well, as Pierre Thomas ran it just 15 times for 87 yards and 2 scores. Now the Panthers love to run the football, and if they let Williams and Stewart get going it could be a long day for this unit. Bet Packers -3 at Sportsbook.com
