Panthers Williams headed to San Diego?
Written February 19, 2010 by Jason Lowry
It looks like the Carolina Panthers are going to lose their best defensive player this offseason in Julius Peppers, but that might not be the only star player not in Carolina next season. According to Bill Barnwell of the Football Outsiders, he sees the Panthers trading running back DeAngelo Williams to the San Diego Chargers for the No.28 pick in the NFL draft.
This move makes some sense if you think about it long-term. Williams is only signed for one more year, and if they aren’t willing to sign him to a monster contract, getting a first round pick is not a bad deal. The Panthers also have running back Jonathan Stewart, who could excel being the primary back.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the Panthers are a better team by trading Williams away, but if they are going to trade him now might be the best time to pull the trigger. If the move goes through, it could make the Chargers the team to beat in the AFC. One other team that could be interested is the Houston Texans, who could offer a much higher pick. Whatever team Williams lands on, he will give that team great NFL odds to win each and every week.

Got something to say?

I seriously hope your information is wrong or incomplete. Trading Williams for JUST a first round pick will not help solve the problems that need fixing in Carolina. Williams averages 5 yards per carry every season and is easily a top 5 RB in the NFL. IF they are going to trade him they’re going to need more than just a 1st round pick. Maybe a 1st round pick, a good WR, and a 3rd round pick the next year. Some people may scoff at my suggestion, but that is how important and valuable he is to the Panthers. Like I said though, I hope all this talk about trading him is a lot of hot air…
sorry not going to happen
A lot of good running backs are picked up in the later rounds. In fact the Chargers have gotten two: Michael Turner and Darren Sproles. No way they are going to give up a No. 1 for him. Especially when he only has 1 more year on his contract. The Chargers have some glaring weaknesses that were exposed by the Jets on the O-Line and D-Line. Their LBs aren’t as group that bad but they aren’t that great either. They are going to need all of their picks to fill these holes. Also, with the Chargers emphasis on passing and using three WRs and spread formations they don’t utilize FBs that much and any RB in the Charger backfield has to be a fierce pass blocker. What they really need is a bruising (245 pound)power back who can pick up some ground yards when they need them and move the pile with a hopefully improved O-Line. Finally AJ Smith has yet to trade a No. 1 pick during his tenure with the Chargers. He believes in building through the draft. Although he has gone as high as a No. 2. You have to look at a possible trade in terms of how it works with the specific situation of each team not just 1.
