Past Winners of Both Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes

Written by -

Many casual followers of American horse racing only follow the US Triple Crown races (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes), and some are only interested when there is an actual contender to win the Triple Crown.  The fact of the matter is that it is actually pretty rare for a horse to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes.  This year’s Belmont features a horse with a good chance to do just that as Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby, finished second in the Preakness, and is currently the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

While certainly not as impressive or historic as winning the Triple Crown, just 11 horses (outside of Triple Crown winners, obviously) before Animal Kingdom have managed to win both the opening (Kentucky Derby) and closing (Belmont Stakes) leg of the series.

Below you’ll find the horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners that won both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in the same year.
