Patriots at Saints Betting Odds
Written November 28, 2009 by Rock Henderson
A team looking to build their own dynasty will clash with the dynasty of the millennium when the New Orleans Saints welcome the New England Patriots to the bayou. The Patriots currently sit at 7-3 and have regained their status as one of the top teams in the league after a slow start. Tom Brady has the New England offense running at full throttle as he is utilizing his multiple weapons. Who Dat Dem’ Saints have maintained their undefeated record despite some close calls in recent weeks. They will face their stiffest test yet against one of the favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. The Saints are a 3 point favorite with an over/under set at 56.5 according to the latest NFL betting lines.
Getting off to a 3-2 start is not exactly what the New England Patriots envisioned, but four wins in their next five games has steadied the ship for the time being. New England is third in the NFL in ppg scoring 29 per contest. They have eclipsed the 30 point mark in four of their last five games and the one game they didn’t was a 27 point effort against the Dolphins. Brady is having another MVP type season with over 3,000 yards passing and 20 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He outplayed Peyton Manning in the Patriot’s last loss, but no one will remember that after the Colts pulled out a one point victory. RB Laurence Maroney has re-emerged from the bottom of the depth chart to take over as the team’s primary ball carrier. Maroney has ran for 455 yards and six touchdowns in limited duty. Wide Receivers Wes Welker and Randy Moss have been dominant in the passing game. Welker is coming off a 15 catch effort versus the Jets that resulted in almost 200 yards receiving. Randy Moss is his usual self, leading the team in touchdown catches with eight and providing a big play threat down the field. The Patriot defense has been good for the most part this season, but in their losses has shouldered much of the blame. Their suspect D did cause Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez into five turnovers in a 31 to 14 romp. The New Orleans Saints are one of two undefeated teams left in the NFL after a 38-7 thrashing of division rival Tampa Bay last Sunday. Statistically, the Saints rank in the top 7 in every category including first in points scored with 37 per game. QB Drew Brees has thrown for 2,746 yards and 22 touchdowns. What makes the Saint offense so lethal is that nine players have 10 catches or more. Brees uses every asset imaginable and the defense has finally caught up with the high powered offense. WR Marques Colston has 44 catches for 687 yards and six touchdowns. Robert Meachem has just 16 catches, but six of them have gone for scores. The running game is spear headed by the capable duo of Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell. Thomas has a team high 584 yards on the ground with five scores, while Bell has rushed for 514 yards and found the goal line four times. Electric back Reggie Bush has six total touchdowns and is a much bigger factor in the passing game as he has carried the ball only 55 times through 10 games. On the defensive side of the ball, the Saints thrive on turnovers as ball hawk Safety Darren Sharper has a knack for turning interceptions into six points. Although they rank towards the middle of most defensive categories, the defense in New Orleans has long been the kryptonite for this team to make the next step.
This will most likely be the least the Saints will be favored the rest of the season. New Orleans scored 38 unanswered against the Bucs last week and finally covered a large spread. They play hungry at home in the Superdome, but I just can’t get myself to doubt Tom Brady in this situation. The Patriots are out to prove a point that the AFC is still superior to the NFC. Bill Belichick will find a way to slow down the potent Saint offense. Play: Patriots +3
