New England Patriots at Denver Broncos NFL Lines
Written October 11, 2009 by Rock Henderson
It seems like one of these games comes around every year for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Belichick’s former offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, will occupy the opposing sideline this Sunday when his Denver Broncos host the Patriots. McDaniels got off to a rocky start in Denver when franchise quarterback Jay Cutler was traded to Chicago in the off-season for Kyle Orton, but the 33 year old head coach has righted the ship and has his team sitting with a perfect 4-0 record. New England is off to a 3-1 start and notched a huge AFC victory last weekend over the Baltimore Ravens. According to the NFL odds, the Pats are 3.5 point favorites at Invesco Field and the total is set for 41 points.
The Denver Broncos play on the field this season has made the tumultuous summer an after thought for most Bronco fans. QB Kyle Orton has ran the Denver offense to perfection through four games after a suspect preseason. The Iowa gunslinger has thrown for over 900 yards and five touchdown with no interceptions. His favorite target has been WR Brandon Marshall with his 16 catches and two touchdowns including the game winner last week against Dallas. Orton has been aided by the top ranked defense in the NFL. It is not often that the D is led by a cornerback but Champ Bailey and company have been locking down opposing passing attacks to the tune of only allowing 162 yards per game. The run defense has been just as good with only 77 yards gained on the ground/game against this athletic bunch. Denver likely still has a bad taste in their mouth after a 41-7 loss to New England a year ago. Take advantage of a $500 match bonus with a new account at BetUS.
New England’s vaunted passing attack was coming under much scrutiny after their loss to the Jets in Week 2. Since that debacle, Brady has guided wins over Atlanta and Baltimore to silence critics. Many were expecting Brady to pickup right where he left off in 2007 when he set the NFL record for touchdown passes in a season with 50, but the Patriots are a much more balanced attack in 09’. WR Wes Welker returned against Baltimore and provided a consistent slot option for the Patriot passing attack, catching six balls for 48 yards against a tough Ravens defense. Randy Moss is averaging over seven catches/game and veteran RB Fred Taylor has given the offense another threat on the ground. The New England defense has gone through a transformation this year as an emphasis has been placed on getting younger and faster. Losing their best defensive player in LB Jerod Mayo hurts for the time being, but the 11 players taking the field now for the Pats have done a nice job keeping opponents at bay.
Belichick takes it personally when one of his disciples is on the opposing sideline and this Sunday should be no different. McDaniels has a bright future, but I don’t believe he or his team is ready for what the Patriots will put on the table. New England has covered the last two numbers and I believe this will be a third in a row. Play: New England -3.5
